dell inspiron 1525 restore

my freind has a dell laptop i was trying to do a full restore on but when i put the cd in it and hit f12 and start it from the cd/dvd rom it just goes to a black screen with a blinking corser in the top left hand corner can anyone help with this problem i know its not the cd rom becouse other disk will start up in it and i went in and set it up to where the cd rom starts first im running vista home premium on it and its the factory restore cd
