I am using XP sp3 and am logged in as administrator. I need to run notepad as administrator. How when i try to do that I get the message saying

C:\Windows/system32\notepad.exe

The service cannot be started, either becuase it is disabled or because it had no enabled devices associated with it.

Maybe some service is disabled??? Need help please.

I'm afraid you are being possessed by some virus

At least, there's something fishy here.

  • Notepad is located in "C:\Windows\", not in "C:\Windows\System32\"
  • Notepad isn't a service and doesn't rely on any services on the system.

I suggest you do a scan with a virusscanner (if possible: a lot of virusses

disable known anti-virus software) and other malicious code.

Good luck,

Peter.

Notepad is located in "C:\Windows\", not in "C:\Windows\System32\

I have both and they're the same (and both run).

Let me check...

Hmmm, you're right, Ponch

@morland: does the copy in C:\Windows work?

Just press the WIN- and R-keys at the same time and type:

C:\Windows\Notepad.exe

Thanks everyone for your replies and help and my apologies for the late feedback.

Yes I have notepad under c:\windows. Well finally found the solution was to enable the "Secondary Logon service". After enabling the service the problem was solved.

Just did a google on the 'Secondary Logon service' and turns out that it is recommended to have this service disabled. Please see the shared links for details. Just thought other member might benefit from it at some stage
