VideoRipper Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Maybe the folder is still there, only it's reference (the shortlinks) got messed up?If you open Windows Explorer (WIN-btn + E) and navigate to "C:\Users\Documents" isit still there? Is the desktop-item selected in "Start button"->"Control Panel"-"Appearance and Personalization"-"Personalization"-"Change desktop icons"?I don't use Windows 7 myself, just found these tips using Google.Greetz,Peter.
DigeratiPrime Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 What application did you install? It might have created a log file in the %temp% folder with details about the changes it made to the system. Also it's suspicious to get a BSoD from a program, usually requires a bad kernel driver, or faulty hardware.
ideas Posted March 27, 2010 Author Posted March 27, 2010 i tried browsing through explorer and still found nothing.was trying to install acid pro 7. what temp folder?
ideas Posted March 27, 2010 Author Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) i just found something really interesting, if i do a search in regedit i can see all my files there in file mru, how do i access it? Edited March 27, 2010 by ideas
VideoRipper Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 The MRU ("Most Recently Used" files) entries in the registry is just a listwith files that... ehm... has been used recently; they aren't the actual filesthemselves. I'm not too familiar with the way Windows 7 organizes files, but if the filesare not where are supposed to be, this can mean a couple of things:The files have been deleted; though in that case they *should* show up inan undelete utilityThe files are still there, but references to them (shortlinks) are messed upThe files are still there, but aren't visible anymore, because of some virusthat tries to hide certain folders (and/or files) in Explorer.I had one of these nasty viruses in the past and if I recall correctly, I wasable to show "Hidden" folders using the command-prompt, but not in Explorer.Greetz,Peter.
DigeratiPrime Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 What recovery software did you use? Try Recuva (freeware).http://www.piriform.com/recuva

ideas Posted March 27, 2010 Author Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) i did do a system restore still no folder and i did restore desktop folder to previous version and still nothing. Edited March 27, 2010 by ideas
DigeratiPrime Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Hmm. By default Previous Versions is enabled on the C partition, and would have made backups daily, including the desktop. Open %userprofile% and right-click Desktop choose Properties, go to the Previous Versions tab, what do you see? Don't restore, but instead double-click on the folders or choose Open. Have you tried searching for the files?
ideas Posted March 28, 2010 Author Posted March 28, 2010 i've already did a previous folder restore from yesterday.
johntappin Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 any updates on this one? I have lost 4 important folders and i am facing similar issue
DigeratiPrime Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Did you also experience a BSoD? Please run this program and tell us the results: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
