Oem disk and key issue

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

First time using nlite and I am having issues trying to install off the disk I made with it. I have an oem key and it is telling me the key is not valid. I would have searched the forums for an answer but the search function doesnt seem to like me very much.

Thanks, Aaron.

First, welcome to MSFN :hello:.

Second, a little more info is helpful - obviously this is an XP OEM key, but what disc was used to make the nLite'd CD? Also, what platform did you run nLite on (another XP machine? Vista/Win7, etc?), and what machine are you trying to install this CD on specifically where you get the error?

I am not sure about the make of the oem disk. I purchased it at a computer with a keyboard, and i dont have fast access to it right now. I actually used an Iso image of the disk instead of the original. I used my laptop with windows 7 to set it all up because I couldnt get net framework 2.0 to install on my old xp install. Any other info I could give you to help? I also just included the sesion.ini to my original post.

milk, your Last Session (at the top) tells us that you have used W7 (as you stated in your reply) to create an ISO for XP. This is probably not going to work if you include an SP, which you have done. That may well be your problem, but I have a question about your source CD. You say "I purchased it at a computer with a keyboard". What does this mean? If you purchased a computer and this CD came with it, then it is a Recovery CD and the copy of Windows can be installed only on the computer it came with - please read the Windows EULA (License). .NET Framework should install just fine under XP. If you will post the error you are getting, perhaps we can help. Enjoy, John.

if he purchased it at a computer store with {insert any small piece of hardware}, it is likely a full install CD with COA.

Usually the Key issue with nLite is related to slip-streaming SP3, so you will have to re slip-stream SP3 from XP-Mode or any other XP machine he can find. It cannot be slip-streamed properly from anything but XP. Windows 7 and Vista simply do not do it correctly.

Oops I what meant to say was that I purchased it at a computer store with a keyboard as the hardware for the oem purchase.

I have installed net framework on previous installs with the same windows copy without issue before. I really have no idea why it wont allow me to update on this one but that is one of the reasons I am reinstalling anyway.

I am now wondering if there is some kind of copyright protection on the original cd so that using the iso file would be an issue and I might want to use some sort of emulation like daemon tools uses in such instances.

Also I will try to make another disk with out the service pack and see how that works.

Thanks for the quick replys.

milk, I am curious where the ISO image came from? When you purchased the OEM CD, it contained all the files and folders you needed and all that was needed was to copy them to a folder on your system. I do not think any kind of copyright is in your way. I think it is the SP3 integration under W7. I have used two different OEM CDs (XP x64) with no problems. When you get your initial install complete, then you can create a complete XP install disk with nLite. Enjoy, John.

He already answered this question.
I actually used an Iso image of the disk instead of the original.
He created the ISO from the original.

Enough witch-hunting for now, he is not doing anything wrong (except for slip streaming SP3 from W7), which as he stated in his final post, he will simply not integrate SP 3 (since he only has access to W7). That should solve all his problems allowing his COA to activate properly when installing.

The search function is so unfair. INVALID.

+Why make an iso then extract it when you can just copy the cd ? But that's not your issue.
