Vista / XP Pro Network Sharing Probs

Hi,

Before I start let me mention that there are a number of topics that come up in Google but tried them and Microsoft database as well with no luck.

I'm trying to share files but mainly trying to share 2 printers connected to a Dell XP Pro Desktop with a XPS Vista Home PREM Dell Laptop.

I set the network up as I would normally, and both machines recognize each other and XP machine will share files with the Vista machine without any quirks.

However, Vista machine does recognize the XP machine, but I cannot gain acces to the shared folder in the XP machine.

At this point I'm thinking that It has something to do with file permissions or some hogwash security issue w/Vista.

  • So far I've checked both Windows Firewall and McAfee Firewall exceptions and everything should be open.
  • I enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP in Network Connections

I've checked into about every option in Network Sharing Center in Vista and Network Connections in XP.

I attached a screenshot of the error message I get when I click the laptop (vista) icon.

Again, I don't believe XP is the problem here, Vista is, (as normal) :realmad: If anybody can think of something, I've spent my entire Sunday messing around with this seemingly simple problem.

Makes me want XP on both machines again

Many thanks, and Happy Holidays

1. Create a local user account on the Vista that you can use from the XP to log in with.

2. Add full NTFS and Share permissions to this user account on the Vista.

So far as I can tell, you are attempting to connect to the network share using the Guest account. You may not have it enabled, which could also give you this message.
