A question, I think I know the answer but just to confirm.

My wife is planning to buy a laptop from a national retail chain with Win 7 on board.

The question is can she load Linux on to create a dual boot machine?

Im sure the answer is "Yes"

Is it better to run Linux as a virtual machine within Win 7?

I'm no expert on Linux, but the answer is yes.

A VM will generally use more resources, it's usually better to dual-boot.

A lot of OEM PC's have a seperate hidden partition used for system recovery, just make sure you don't use that and you create a seperate partition.

I would also strongly suggest you make sure you get a Windows 7 DVD with your laptop. Not a recovery CD/DVD, but a proper Windows 7 DVD.
