d0s4d1 Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 This is my first post here, so hi everyone. I need to get XP Pro onto a spare laptop since I broke my other laptop's screen. the laptops have SATA drives, so I need to slipstream that in. I'd also like to slipstream in SP3 and drivers for both of these Compaq laptops. I've been trying this for about 2 days using NLite 1.4.9.1. NLite seems to successfully slipstream everything and burn a CD. I reboot with the CD and it asks me to insert the Service Pack 3 disk in Drive A. I tried that but it wouldn't fit Below is a history of what got me here, but here's the short version:NLite is making XP coasters that have directories and files in the directories, but no files in the root of the CD at all. So textmode setup ends with "Insert Service Pack 3 CD" in "Drive A". The source modified by NLite has the appropriate tag files (like WIN51IP.SP3) and other important files, but the CD doesn't. Why?I don't have a copy of the log file right now, so I'll run it again and make another coaster for science and post. thanksKeilaTag FilesInitially everyone's suggestions on most of the threads I read had to do with the tag files missing. http://www.msfn.org/board/nlite-winxp-pro-...ck-t118598.htmlThat error is typical of missing or misplaced "tag" files, as Legoliam pointed out.Read more about them here:http://www.msfn.org/board/Edit-txtsetupsif...o-M-t65541.htmlhttp://www.msfn.org/board/XP-SP2-bootable-...in-t111302.htmlI checked my tag files, and they were correct in all respects - http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=16381Win51 ident file is required for all windows version.XP Professional :Win51ip.sp1 - sp1 ident fileWin51ip.sp2 - sp2 ident fileXP Home :Win51ic.sp1 - sp1 ident fileWin51ic.sp2 - sp2 ident fileWin51 will be present in the root of XP cd.Other files will be generated after integrating xp installation with sp.These are TEXT files you can make with Notepad:QUOTE- WIN51- WIN51IP- WIN51IP.SP1Files WIN51 and WIN51IP contain the word "Windows" without the quotes, third file goes empty. You will probably have to set your Windows Explorer to show known file-extensions so you can delete/change the .txt-extensionThis will prevent the CD asking "put the SPx CD into drive A:" during install.txtsetup.sifhttp://www.msfn.org/board/nlite-winxp-pro-...ck-t118598.htmlfdv posts:Maybe this could be FAQ'd.The problem is in TXTSETUP under [strings] with the spcdtagfilei variable. The error message is this, right?"Please insert the Windows XP Professional Service Pack [x] CD in drive A:"We need to take the tagfile out of the equation.Open TXTSETUP.SIF and LAYOUT.INFIn BOTH files, do a search and replace for ,_x, to ,, (we are getting rid of the _x)In BOTH files, do a search and replace for = 100, to = 1,Find[sourceDisksNames.x86]1 = %cdname%,%cdtagfilei%,,\i386Change it to:[sourceDisksNames.x86]1 = %cdname%,\win51ip,,\i386Save both, close them, and retry.I tried adding some entry in some file. I can't find it now but it no longer matters . . . . . because while looking for that link I hit this one againhttp://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t122335.htmlmbappeAug 22 2008, 10:52 PMI got one to work. I started from scratch again. I copied the CD to E:\WXPOEM_EN. I edited I386\SETUPP.INI as described before. Then slipstreamed SP3 from E:\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe. Then added the key and created the iso. This time it did not create "Copy of WIN51IP.SP3". And the CD works!I did not mention before that I was running nLite in a VMware virtual machine, but I was. Well, I'm not running VMWare, but it got me to check what was actually on the CD NLite burned rather than just looking at what's in my source directory. This is bizarre. I just checked using both laptops (one of which is limping along with a CRT attached) and the root of the CD seems to be empty except for directories. I can't understand how it even made it as far as it did in the setup. So now my question is, why are there no files in the root of the CD's this thing is making?
d0s4d1 Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 hoooo I lied. I do have one of the lastsession files. But here's the catch. After running it all in one step, I had a hunch that a driver was colliding with the service pack. So I ran it once for the drivers, etc, and then ran it again for the service pack. Or was it the other way around? So this is only part of the picture. (What I'm doing next is starting over using the other laptop, clean source, new installation of NLite.)[Main]Env = 1.4.9.1 - 2.0.50727.1433.Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3, v.5755Target = going to have to run NLite again and remove components, and maybe delete some things by hand if I have to. The extra stuff I added at the beginning was 57MB but I'm over by 130 and I don't want to delete my xtra stuff if I can help it. Hanging it up for the time being, maybe for the night. Any suggestions appreciated.~Keila
ccl0 Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 holy crap. please edit your posts so they are not 800 miles long
Sp0iLedBrAt Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I agree with ccl0; if they are easier to read, you will get more suggestion and help.My suggestion is about SATA drivers: try to use only the ones you need; integrate them last in the order of drivers in nLite and do it in textmode. Can't fail! And a question for you: at the beginning of post #2, I see this: "Env = 1.4.9.1 - 2.0.50727.1433.Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3, v.5755"; how did v.5755 get there?
g-force Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 And a question for you: at the beginning of post #2, I see this: "Env = 1.4.9.1 - 2.0.50727.1433.Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3, v.5755"; how did v.5755 get there? This is okay, if yor running system is up-to-date.Holy crap, indeed. 3 long posts, no code-wraps or qouting - unreadable. And the problem is in sentence 2 of 1000...I reboot with the CD and it asks me to insert the Service Pack 3 disk in Drive A.Remove "win51ip.SP1" and/or "win51ip.SP2" in root of XPCD.
Sp0iLedBrAt Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Well, if you say so... it's just a number like that has never appeared in any of my files produced by nLite. This is my last one, from 2 days ago:[Main]Env = 1.4.9.1 - 2.0.50727.3603.Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3Target = Windows XP Professional SP3 - 5.1.2600.5512 - English (United States)
d0s4d1 Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 I'm not used to getting told that I've given too much information when working on a technical problem, but I apologise! I used to do tech support and was always frustrated when people would tell me part of a story and not include log files. I'll try to be more brief. Not sure about my windows version number v.5755. I never said the versions of Windows I was running were standard. They are not the same as the one I'm trying to install, which is a much cleaner copy (as in not from bittorrent, a good clean copy)also, to gforce, I would try removing the extra sp1 and sp2 tag files, but those aren't in the root of the CD. The CD burned by NLite has only directories off the root, with files in those directories, but no files in the root of the CD. I tried again on the other laptop this time, and still the CD burned by NLite has no files in the root of the CD. The files are in the root of my source dir. The CD is unusable. Should I include the log files? I don't want to make the posts long, but I thought that was for trubleshooting this sort of tihng. Anyway now I see two real options before me:1) try burning with NLite after renaming my source dir from dosadiXP.133 to dosadiXP in case using a file extension on a dir is causing this.2) try using Nero to burn a bootable Windows XP CD using the files NLite configured, but not using NLite to burn it. 3) give up on NLite and hit F6 to load SATA driver during textmode setup using my old XP SP2 cCD. Any other ideas? So far, NLite fail.Should I include the two lastsession files from the experiment on this other laptop? I had to run nLite twice since the first time it was 830MB. I cut software out and got it down to 600MB.
d0s4d1 Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 Three reasons! Oh, and bright red uniforms! I'll come in again . . . . . .
ccl0 Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 (edited) its not that you are giving too much information, it is HOW you are giving itthere is certain forum etiquette people should usemore specifically, your lastsession files can be attached, not copied/pasted as you have them in this post Edited October 21, 2009 by ccl0
d0s4d1 Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 thanks for clarifying . . . . . I didn't realize I could attach the files. The files attached are from today's first attempt, which was on laptop #2 rather than laptop #1, and produced the same effects. The CD burned has no files in the root of the CD, including the tag files. Since then I have tried burning on laptop #1 after renaming the source dir to 132 rather than dosadiXP.132 just in case that cauased the problem. Nope. So now I jumped to assembling the bootable CD and burning with Nero 6. http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=297I'm about to reboot and try the disk. I'll let you know how it goes.LAST_SESSION.INILAST_SESSION__205510.21_00.32.01_.INI
d0s4d1 Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 ok, Nero burned a good bootable XP CD with the files in the root of the CD present and correct. Only problem now is that SATA driver appears not to work. I used the source that NLite slipstreamed, and just used Nero for the creation of the bootable CD itself. I'm going to check my SATA drivers and re-integrate SATA drivers into this source dir, and try again. It seems my methodology from now on is to just use NLite to slipstream & edit source, and use Nero to assemble & burn the CD.
d0s4d1 Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 I re-slipstreamed 3 drivers more carefully using NLite, assembled and burned with Nero, and it appears to be working properly. It autoloaded the SATA drivers during textmode setup and now I'm partitioning the target hard drive. intel msm-5.7.2.1003-whql-32-64bitssp32478sp32781These are for HP Compaq nc6320 and HP Compaq Presario V6105NR (V6000 series with Intel chipset/CPU)I had to use Winimage to extract the driver files from their stupid floppy-burning utility. It works!I can't explain why NLite insists on burning bad CDs with no files in their root. If you experience that problem, use Nero to compile the image and burn.
ccl0 Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 (edited) thanks for clarifying . . . . . I didn't realize I could attach the files.i was actually hoping you would edit your original posts with the attachments so people didnt have to scroll oh and i've read that the best method of integrating the drivers is to do it very last before making an .iso i read a little more of your post, and were you using a clean source? you should always start with a fresh, unmodified source when working as for drivers i would actually maybe recommend these here http://www.msfn.org/board/integration-inte...rs-t107504.html (Intel ICH7R/M, ICH8R/M, ICH9R/M or ICH10R/D S-ATA AHCI and RAID Controllers)i've got a v6000 series hp laptop and they worked for me Edited October 22, 2009 by ccl0
g-force Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 (edited) From first post:Below is a history of what got me here, but here's the short version:NLite is making XP coasters that have directories and files in the directories, but no files in the root of the CD at all. So textmode setup ends with "Insert Service Pack 3 CD" in "Drive A".I´m sure I didn`t catch that yesterday.I read over and over again - and I missed it, sorry.Fine that you figured out the problem.
