few component questions

not to spam for each small question new thread....

- regarding security center, nlite doesn't "red" as some vital component and only tags it as message nager

but trough this win update and firewall is set up by user, so if i remove this, will there be some

complications with XP without it ?

- .net 1.1, is this essential for XP to have ? (i know 2.0 is totaly different, but 1.1 was their starting point)

- i noticed some post SP3 hotfix provide new tcpip.sys, but since i select nlite to patch it for more

open connections, and naturaly it overwrites newest version, does this pose some security issue

or last downloadable build already has latest tcpip.sys init ?

- and here comes one regarding registry, i have noticed that some registry entries are only

acceptable for HKEY_CURRENT_USER, and never for HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT (all users)

(example attached, hide_addressbar.reg), is there any way to force this upon system ?

again sorry, for multiple questions, but in my opinion its more clean than to spam 4 separate threads

Hide_Addressbar.reg

vinifera, I think you are going to be unlikely to get answers to most of your questions. This is what your VM is for - experiment. This applies to your Prefetch question - do a Google search for 'EnablePrefetcher' and play with the Registry key. Windows does not need any .NET Framework but some applications do (eg, nLite, Catalyst Control Center, etc). I use the latest (3.5). Do a search here - many threads about including .NET. I think some users do remove the Security Center (I do not), but I cannot answer your other questions - perhaps others can respond. Enjoy, John.

You can safely remove it completely, win update and firewall can be set up in control panel.

- .net 1.1, is this essential for XP to have ? (i know 2.0 is totaly different, but 1.1 was their starting point)

Not at all, only very few programs use this version (like media center 2005).

Use 3.5sp1 instead (also contains .net 2.0 and 3.0)

nLite does not overwrite the file , it patches it at some know offset.

i use an update pack with latest KB from MS and always did the tcp/ip ptach with nLite with no problems.

Don't have the answer to your last question.

How do you mean? Are you talking about nLite's built-in tweaks or your own reg files?

I'm still not certain what you're trying to accomplish. What do you mean by "force" and "accept"?

I'll go out on a limb and guess that you're trying to add Internet Explorer preferences for all users during Windows installation using your REG file—please correct me if I'm wrong. The problem is, when IE initializes during user profile creation it seems to wipe out non-default IE user preferences. I set those preferences within my IE8 addon by using an INF. First, the file adds the following registry entry so that my INF is called whenever a new user profile is first used.

HKU,".DEFAULT\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce","IE8.1st_UserStart",,"rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection 5erIE8.inf,1st_UserStart"

The above code instructs Windows to execute the [1st_UserStart] section in 5erIE8.inf. This section contains only an AddReg directive that adds my tweaks.

[Tweaks.AddReg]
; vinifera's tweaks, converted to INF format.

- .net 1.1, is this essential for XP to have ? (i know 2.0 is totaly different, but 1.1 was their starting point)

The .NET nLite would remove would`t be installed automaticly.

It only an extra folder containig that very, very old .Net1-Setup. > to remove

- and here comes one regarding registry, i have noticed that some registry entries are only

acceptable for HKEY_CURRENT_USER, and never for HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT (all users)

(example attached, hide_addressbar.reg), is there any way to force this upon system ?

I don`t think it`s like that. Some reg-entries are executed after logon by "nlite.inf",

which execution is written to registry in "cmdlines.txt". I think "nlite.inf" is executed

for every new user that logs on that system.

i may confused you all here, ill try to explain more detailed

regarding registry, i posted above a reg entry that is supposed to remove addressbar in both IE and Eplorer (file manager), it works if entry is added under HKCU, but not for HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT, which would be for ALL users, so my "goal" is that addrbar is gone for any created or current user, this does not work at all, thats why i asked if it can be forced upon windows

i even tried to run the reg key inside OS (not only while installing nlited os), it refuses to take change...

as for net 1, i ment, is it esential component for XP OS, i know 2, 3 and 3.5 are not even they do have 1.1 inside

but i think .net 1 was offered via Updates with SP1 (at the time), so i ask should i have it (only if OS uses it)

heh hope you understood

XP doesn't need any .net framework to run (except media center version)

i suggest you to install only 3.5 (who install 3.0 and 2.0 anyway), there are addons and addons maker here and at ryanvm.

.net 1.1 is offered on win update but not needed by any recent program, they have switched to later versions.

and never for HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT (all users)

Just to make sure:

"HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT" is the key for all new created users,

not for "all users", when they have logged on and got their own profile.

"HKCU" is every time created based on ".DEFAULT".

Regtweaks in ".DEFAULT" have no effect to the logged on users.

yeah my bad, i did crappy expression :)

but i am still curious why some reg tweaks only work for HKCU

like the one i attached above

if you make multiple user accounts, and apply with changed key to HKCU

then kill explorer and run it again, the addressbar will be gone

BUT if you apply the same reg tweak with HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT

while installing OS, or within account, and then create again multiple new accounts

all those new accounts will still have addressbar

...when IE initializes during user profile creation it seems to wipe out non-default IE user preferences.

This includes preferences set in HKU\.DEFAULT. You need to find a way of importing settings after user account creation, not before or during. The method I posted above should work. ;)

forgive me for being stupid but heck... i never "played" with these things :)

i am using Sereby's IE8 addon to install IE8

and official MS hotfixes for IE8

since you call this addon and is in 7zip, do i add this in addons/hotfixes section

or something else ? :P (sorry)
