anglerss Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 HELP--I am trying to load Windows XP PRO into a Dell Dimension 8400 with a new Seagate 160 GB SATA HD. I downloaded the drivers from the Dell website and unzipped them and tried to slipstream them us nLite as this computer didn't come with a floppy drive from Dell. nLite cannot find any .inf files in any of these drivers so I cannot create a CD using nLite and install XP PRO. I have been working 3 weeks trying to install Windows XP Pro and can't get anywhere. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
cluberti Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 If you downloaded the zipped .exe driver packages from Dell, you need to first run the .exe to extract the driver components - nlite can't integrate .exe files as drivers, it needs the raw package (including the extracted .sys, .inf, and .dll files). If you run the Dell driver .exe's, they generally ask you where you want to extract the files before the driver setup package runs - select a folder location, let the driver extract, and then cancel the setup when it continues. Do this for all the .exe driver packages you downloaded from Dell, and then point nLite at those new folders. It should work.
Sp0iLedBrAt Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Or use the Universal Extractor to unpack the .EXE files into folders. Then point nLite to those folders.Enjoy
anglerss Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 I see my original post was moved. This is my first useage and I sincerely hope that I didn't do anything wrong. Thank you for your replies and help. However I tried a download from driverpacks.net and using uni-extract16 and I am unable to find any .inf files which nLite is calling for. I am to such a point of frustration that I'm about ready to throw this Dell in the garbage. I am not a computer geek, just an old man trying to keep his computer running. Thanks again.
Guest Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 I looked through the drivers for a Dell Dimension 8400 at Dell's website and did not find any F6 drivers. Can you tell us more details on what driver you are trying to use?
Sp0iLedBrAt Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 I found THIS and THIS, and an installer (the first link) that creates an image on a floppy. Unfortunately, I don't have a floppy drive to see what's inside, and the Extractor won't open it.After half an hour of trying, I am sorry to give up trying to extract it.Download the file, put a floppy in the drive and it will do the work itself. If you don't have one either, ...well... :-)
Guest Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 I saw the Intel Application Accelerator too but didn't think that would be a proper driver. I have a floppy if you need me to extract the files or you can do it yourself with a virtual floppy drive here.
