hi, i have used nlite in the past, but in a few days my 1005ha eee pc will come, and i just want it to be as slick as possible!

so for that reason, i'm removing stuff.

i'm under the impression that removing most things just make the iso smaller, but is it really only remving services that actually make the os run faster?

since if removing drivers that i won't need will make it faster, than this is what i will do.

i saw some some site, and a guy said he remvoed all of his drivers (i assume he slipped his eee pc drivers in instead).

if i remove ALL drivers, and do not install my eee pc ones via nlite, will my computer actually work, will it let me log on and install my own drivers as normal?

also, i thought that whenever i put in a flash drive/dvd drive etc that is new, xp hunts down a driver for it?

does that mean flash drives won't work if i remove ALL drivers? (i doubt eee pc has specific flash card drivers)

i thought this was 'plug and play' when you didn't 'need' drivers, it just works, or is plug and play when it finds the driver for you?

basically, is it a good idea to only install my asus drivers, and will i lose anything, and would i gain speed performance (i'm not interested in hard drive space)

thank you so much, sorry, i find it hard to condense information!

josh.

p.s. i do not want an unattended install, but does this mean i can't use the option to slip in a custom msstyles and theme? thanks.

joshuatm, not installing drivers will only reduce space on the CD and HDD. It will not increase performance. Windows only installs drivers when it detects the hardware that requires them. Removing or disabling (a safer thing to do) services, will improve performance. Please see the Black Viper site. I think most pieces of HW, including flash drives require drivers. Windows has a version (if you don't remove them) for most types of HW. If you were to remove all drivers, I suspect you will have a CD that cannot be used to install Windows. I would suggest you remove drivers (and any components) that you KNOW you will NEVER need. Once removed you should consider them gone, very difficult or impossible to get back without a reinstall. There are a number of threads on the ASUS eee - please search. Enjoy, John.

hey thanks for the super speedy reply!

yeah ok, i'll just stick to services then

that black viper site is verrry useful!

thanks alot.

oh and sorry, you couldn't just help me with these could you (i don't want to make a new thread, well, i'm not sure i'm supposed to)

i do not want an unattended install, but does this mean i can't use the option to slip in a custom msstyles and theme?

and

the cd i am using has sp3 already in it, i'm not sure if this was added via nlite, but, am i still 'allowed' to use nlite on vista and edit it, since i read that vista and windows 7 have trouble when you slip sp3 into it, but is everything ok if it is in already? -i also have xp to use nlite with, just vista is on my main pc.

thank you!

From what I heard (not own experience) nliting in general could have unforeseen effects which may trouble the installation. You may want to search out a xp install to make that finall rendering of your nlited xp CD.

Secondly, you are able to choose between different "grades" of unattendance in almost the same spot as you add styles and themes. On the "unattended" page go to the general frame. Upper left corner, there's the choices for you. Press the ?-button next to it for a good explanation. I guess you might want to try "provide defaults" or "GUI attended", but I never really tried those since I always chose the unattended "hide pages".

Hope this helps!

joshuatm, I did fail to answer your unattended question, but Knowtwo is correct, you can use the Unattended task of nLite and not do an unattended install. Just select the options you desire including themes. The bigger question you raise is whether your source had SP3 added by nLite. You do not want to start with a source that has had nLite run against it before. But, a far larger question is the legitimacy of the copy of Windows. You should use only a legal copy of Windows with a legal and valid key. The CD (or recovery media) that comes with your PC will be legal. Or, you can purchase a copy of Windows XP. MS has a license agreement (EULA) that dictates the use of their SW. Please use Help and Support to find and read the EULA. I suggest you, for sure, never DL and use a copy of Windows. It will be illegal and may well contain viruses and no telling what. As a final problem with non-normal copies of Windows, they are considered warez and MSFN forum rules prevent us from discussing warez. Please use the Forum Rules link, above, to read the rules. In closing, this (if you have problems): Please attach (not paste) your Last Session.ini. Make sure to always start with a fresh copy of your CD files/folders, do all your work in one nLite session and integrate only one SP. Please report when you have a solution, so others can benefit. Enjoy, John.

i wouldn't download anything illegal, don't worry!

thank you for all your help!

i can finally proceed with my custom xp!

-edit.

so this disk i have may not be legit?

is there anyway to check if it has been made with nlite, or simpler (kind of), can/could people buy xp disks with sp3 in them? if not, then this says that my disk is not to be used...

sorry if i shouldn't be speaking about this, just want to make sure.

joshuatm, the question is: Where did you get the CD? You can buy CDs with SP3. You can open the CD with Windows Explorer and see if there are Last Session files there. If so, definitely has been nLited. If not, still maybe, since you can select an option to not save the Last Session. Do a search on the CD for *nLite* and see if you find any files with nLite in them. Post a screen shot of your Windows Explorer view of your CD. Enjoy, John.

nLite is for personal use only. If you have a disc that's nLited by someone else you know or not, it breaks nLite's EULA already. And if you don't know what's in the disc, you most probably downloaded it and it is illegal as well and you'll end up asking us why this or that doesn't work and nobody will know because you don't know what CD you're starting from.

thank you once again for your help and fast relplies!

i did not download it, it my step-brother's cd and his eee pc, i have no idea about japanese to begin with, just he isn't that great at english!

not that i was 'lying' in my first post, just i don't think it is necessary to explain every little detail, i didn't think it would be relevant. if i am not supposed to nlite his cd for him, then i will just tell him what to do.

it may be nlited, but i doubt it, i do not have the cd at this house, but i will check, and based on that i will/will not nlite it. but anyway, i got my information, i shouldn't have to prove anything, but i do understand that you don't want microsoft (or anyone) thinking that nlite is being used illegally.

thank you. :)

joshuatm, you certainly can nLite a copy of Windows for your brother's or a friend's personal use. Ponch and I are just saying that the copy of Windows must be legitimate and not nLited before. Lots of people come here with problems that result from running nLite more than once on the same source folder. So, if your brother or some friend of his has run nLite on the copy of Windows, it is not a good candidate for your project. In this case you need to find the original CD containing the original, unaltered copy of Windows. Enjoy, John.
