Setup is starting windows...hangs

Im currently making a new XP home install CD, as the one i have is a 2002 version (sp1). Im integrating SP3 and integrating my intel sata ahci drivers. Im setting it up as a unattended installation and testing it on my xVM virtual machine... it keeps hanging on the Setup is starting Windows part of the installation. after lots of trial and error i tracked it down to something im doing with the unattend part and im thinking it has something to do with the OEM preinstall being disabled/enabled and it conflicting with some other setting im using. if anyone can tell me what i need to post or ellaborate on i would appreciate it...

also, does anyone here use zone alarm antivirus? iv noticed that i cant run nlite with ZA running or else it will freeze my machine.... iv tried allowing it in the trusted zone but still nothing...

thanks

I think i might have figured out what it is. On the unattend setup i chose ACPI multiprocessor, switched it back to automatic and setup got past the stuck point.... bug maybe? its being tested on a VM so its probably not a 100% hardware simulation

Vhal, most use automatic for the computer type.

bug maybe?
Whose bug - yours? Please attach (not paste) your Last Session.ini. Make sure to always start with a fresh copy of your CD files/folders, do all your work in one nLite session and integrate only one SP. Please report when you have a solution, so others can benefit. Since you have already pasted your Last Session, please be so kind as to delete it from your reply and attach it. Use the Browse... and UPLOAD buttons at the bottom right. Enjoy, John.

sorry about the pasting.... didnt realize you had an attachment upload here. the hang problem was in fact caused by me choosing ACPI multiprocessor.... so i switched that back to automatic.... right now its stuck in a continuous setup loop that im trying to work out. as for the old last session config file.... its deleted. wiped all and started fresh. but if i have future problems i will attach the actual file

EDIT: ok yeah i cant figure out the reason for the constant setup/install loop. my VMs "bios" is set to boot from the hard drive first. iv tried 2 different CD builds, one that has the "push any key to boot from cd" and one that doesnt...

have uploaded my inf files

Vhal, I don't think this has anything to do with your problem, but you need to remove the Tweak "Explorer-Launch folder windows in a separate process". It exposes a Windows bug. You also need to stay away from turning off "push any key to boot from CD". This results in a looping Setup because it will never boot from the HDD. What VM system are you using? I use VMware Server and do not burn CDs, just point the VM to the ISO file created by nLite. Since VMs use their own drivers, yours get ignored. But, you have included many different version of the SATA drivers. I think you will need only the first two, then only the pair for 7, 8, 9 or 10 according to what HW you really have. The bad thing about text mode drivers is that the last one to get there rules. In your case, 9 and if your HW is not compatible with 9, then your install on HW will fail (probably a BSOD 07B). Sometime when an install is looping (BSODs), you can get into Safe Mode. Try hitting F8 and if you can get into Safe Mode, go to Properties on My Computer and disable Automatically Restart, then reboot. When the BSOD comes around, your system will stop so you can get and post the error code. I just noticed that your Tweaks contain the disable of AutoRestart. Still, try F8. BTW, in the nLite folder of Program Files folder is a Presets folder that will have all your previous Last Session files by date/time code, unless you have deleted them. I trust you have followed other suggestions in my last post - eg, always start with a fresh copy...? If you get a minute, please edit your long post and delete the pasted Last Session. Thanks for the attached files - much easier to deal with. Please keep us informed. Enjoy, John.

"you need to remove the Tweak "Explorer-Launch folder windows in a separate process". It exposes a Windows bug" what bug do you speak of? not familiar with that one. im using virtual box for my VM, and i do the same, make an ISO and just point it to that. my MoBos uses the ICH10R controller driver, guess i could just select that one hah. about to try a new build now so i will keep you posted.

thanks for the help by the way :D

strange.... instead of adding all the SATA drivers.... i added the first 2 (ESB2 SATA AHCI Controller & ESB2 SATA RAID Controller) and added ICH10R SATA AHCI Controller and later tried all the SATA/RAID drivers with ICH10 in it, since my motherboard specifies that it does in fact use a ICH10R chipset..... but when i integrate those into my build, its still coming up with the crap saying that windows did not detect a hard disk blah blah.....

so i went through the drivers one at a time and tried each to see which one works.... the ICH8RDHDO got me further.... im just wondering why its not accepting the ICH10 driver.... when i check my device manager on my current system, its using that controller... but alas.... its still looping the installation...

Vhal, the Last Session you posted has only one driver. This, for sure will not work. I think you need the first two and the pair for ICH10. Please post a link of where you DLed the drivers and we will take a look at them. Try pushing F8 during the looping and see if you can get into Safe Mode. If you can, turn off Auto Restart (My Computer-Properties) and reboot. It should stop on a BSOD. Please post the code. Enjoy, John.

EDIT: A search will show many hits on ""Explorer-Launch folder windows in a separate process", this in particular.

these are the drivers im currently trying to use....http://downloadmirror.intel.com/17413/eng/f6flpy3288.zip

i just finished testing those using my original XP cd on my virtual machine. i loaded them onto a floppy and did it the classic F6 way... first i loaded up the 2 ESB drivers, then i loaded the ICH10D/DO and the ICH10R (both of which i got the message saying that windows already has a driver that can be used blah blah BS) got the same thing... Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer....

so im kind of led to believe that that theres something screwy with those drivers or theres somethign screwy with the way VirtualBox handles SATA AHCI.... as many times as i have used my original windows XP source disk to do installs, i have always had to just specify 1 driver with F6...

EDIT: im fairly convinced that it has something to do with the VM cause i used the drivers that came with my mobo CD and its still doin the same BS... the first time i used nLite for a CD build it worked perfectly... but the VM was configured as IDE... so yeah... i dunno if anyone else uses Suns virtual box but if youre bored enough and want a headache maybe try to emulate what im doing *shrug* need a drink

Vhal, I guess I had a block - forgot you were on a VM. I run VMware Server and don't have to load any drivers. VMware supplies its own drivers. I have never used VirtualBox. At the time I started this, it did not support my OS (XP x64), so I know nothing about it. Have you used it before? Have you successfully installed Windows on a VM? Do you have an HDD defined in VB? I won't look at your drivers unless and until you have problems on your hardware. Please let us know about your VB configuration. There are lots of people here who do know a lot about it and can help. Enjoy, John.
