Operating system: Windows XP Professional SP3.

I disabled "Allow receiving remote assistance", and I also disabled "Remote Desktop". However some of the users computers that I have setup have constant questions and it would be preferable to fix their computers without having to run downstairs each time. In hindsight, not such an intelligent decision on my part. I have re-enabled the terminal server via the registry in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server] and disabled the deny TS Connection. RDP is enabled in system properties, with my user added as allowed. I also started the Remote Desktop Help Session Manager service. As far as I know (which isn't all that much) I should be able to connect.

Does anyone know how to undue whatever it is that was done by checking to remove those two options in nlite? I tried to download from the kbase and install it, but it wouldn't let me since I am running XP. Any input appreciated, Thanks!

In case anyone else experiences this problem, this is what I did to make it work:

(Some steps might not be necessary)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server]

TSEnabled = 1

fDenyTSConnections = 0

fAllowToGetHelp = 1 (for remote assistance)

AllowTSConnections = 1

Right click My Computer / Properties / Remote, check remote desktop and add in the users you want to be able to connect.

Start the Remote Procedure Call service (unsure if necessary)

Turn off Windows Firewall, it will not allow RDP if you've taken it out via nlite.

Put in original XP cd and under additional tasks (I think) choose to setup a remote desktop connection. It will re-install some components, and then tell you it can't complete installation but that's fine.

Reboot

Remote Desktop Protocol now works.
