This is because I don't really understand the difference between filter, encoder, and decoder. I know they must have different functions. If a MPEG filter is needed to play mpg files, why do I need its encoder and decoder?

If a MPEG filter is needed to play mpg files, why do I need its encoder and decoder?An encoder is used to compress a media file into a specific format. A decoder is used to play back a media format. I do not reccomend codec packs, instead use Media Player Classic Home Cinema which has many decoders built right in.
