windows explorer stopped working

i had newly purchased hp pavillion dv2910tx and it comes with windows vista home premium.

recently when i am trying to open one of my drive or any folder i am getting a message which says that windows explorer stopped working and it gets restarted. i tryed many thing to solve it but couldn't able to solve. as i had formatted my laptop and reinstalled windows vista. but the problem remains the same.

and i am trying to install windows xp sp2.

but after the cd gets booted then a message appears which says that windows couldn't detect any hard-drive connected to your computer.

please some one help me.

Hello and welcome to THE forums! Now to your issue: do you have installed Ace Mega Codecs Pack or K-lite Codec Pack? If so, your best bet is to reinstall Windows Vista (yes, again!) then install Shark007's Vista Codec or ffdshow.
