INTI Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Hello,My question has to do with folder redirects for User profiles and My Document folders. I have multiple hard drives on my computer. I typically use the C: drive for my Windows installation and program files, but redirect both My Documents and User settings to a different drive, in this case D:. It looks like nLITE provides for folder redirects on the Options tab under Folders. Would I change the target for Profiles Path from %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings to the following D:\Documents and Settings ?Or am I misreading this? I've typically used folder redirect utilities post install, but was hoping to avoid that through the nLITE slipstream process. Also, if in fact the above is correct, is there any risk to having the new installation overwrite any files/folders from a previous installation - that is would all my files in my My Documents folder from prior install be lost when Windows is reinstalled using the nLITE custom version? Should I rename my folders on the D: drive to avoid this? I'm a newbie if it isn't clear by now. Thxs in advance.
johnhc Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 INTI, your change to the Folders Option is correct, but your next question is very interesting. I think you need to try this on a virtual system before you try it on a real machine. There are several systems available for free - e.g. VirtualPC, VirtualBox and VMware Server. Usually the D drive is expected to be formatted and setup may notice that it is not and ask permission to overwrite it. Others who have done this may be able to comment. Have you tried searching these forums? Enjoy, John.
INTI Posted February 7, 2009 Author Posted February 7, 2009 Thanks John. I plan on testing this on a virtual machine, but wasn't sure how multiple drives would be reflected through the virtual platform. The D: drive would already be formatted. Just to be safe, I'll probably just rename my current My Documents folder to something else, least it messes up the new Windows installation looking to create a new My Documents folder on the D drive in the same location. If anybody has experience with this, I'd be appreciative in hearing how you manged the install. Otherwise, I'll just report back on my experience.Thxs.
johnhc Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 INTI, this is why you test on a virtual system. I use VMware Server and have used multiple partitions but not multiple HDDs. It has to work, because real users (vs testers) use VMware Server to run several large servers in one host. I am sure they use many HDDs. In VMware Server, you would just allocate several virtual HDDs and each would be a file on your host. With respect to the original, I suspect Windows is going to want to format the D disk or have it previously formatted. It will create the whole Documents and Settings structure on the disk. Please let us know what you learn. Enjoy, John.
