  1. How common is it to find malware in a cab file downloaded through recommendations made on this site? Is it even possible? The reason I ask is that Trend Micro picked up the following malware ( TROJ_ONLINEG.TZH) in a cab file that I downloaded through a reference off of this site for an addon. Obviously, the file was hosted somewhere else, so who knows. The cabs were for Zone Alarm Free and K-lite codec pack. I'm new to this stuff, so I'm not trying to flame here, just understand the risks. Thanks, INTI
  2. I'm trying to test my new Windows ISO in Virtual Machine and was mostly successful in installing a clean system. However, one of the things I wanted to check out was that the drivers for each of my hardware components installed correctly into the virtual machine setup. Upon looking at my device manager in the in the virtual machine install, I noticed that many of the drivers are not listed for various hardware profiles. Is this normal? Is it correct to see an "Intel Pentium II Processor to PCI Bridge" driver listed when I have an AMD Athlon processor? I just don't see a lot of what I would have expected when comparing my current system devices to what I see in the virtual environment. Which leads me to a more general question, what exactly should one look for when testing a Windows ISO in virtual machine? Am I simply looking for a smooth installation? Do I need to check that every addon to make sure it works? How does one check to see that the specific drivers took to the intended hardware? I was unsuccessful finding anything on the board that explains this. Perhaps I'm not searching on the correct term or board. Thanks, INTI LAST_SESSION.INI
  3. Thanks John. I plan on testing this on a virtual machine, but wasn't sure how multiple drives would be reflected through the virtual platform. The D: drive would already be formatted. Just to be safe, I'll probably just rename my current My Documents folder to something else, least it messes up the new Windows installation looking to create a new My Documents folder on the D drive in the same location. If anybody has experience with this, I'd be appreciative in hearing how you manged the install. Otherwise, I'll just report back on my experience. Thxs.
  4. Hello, My question has to do with folder redirects for User profiles and My Document folders. I have multiple hard drives on my computer. I typically use the C: drive for my Windows installation and program files, but redirect both My Documents and User settings to a different drive, in this case D:. It looks like nLITE provides for folder redirects on the Options tab under Folders. Would I change the target for Profiles Path from %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings to the following D:\Documents and Settings ? Or am I misreading this? I've typically used folder redirect utilities post install, but was hoping to avoid that through the nLITE slipstream process. Also, if in fact the above is correct, is there any risk to having the new installation overwrite any files/folders from a previous installation - that is would all my files in my My Documents folder from prior install be lost when Windows is reinstalled using the nLITE custom version? Should I rename my folders on the D: drive to avoid this? I'm a newbie if it isn't clear by now. Thxs in advance.
  5. Just installed an different Virtual machine......seems to be working. Thanks for all the great suggestions (tongue in cheek)
  6. I'm trying to test an ISO I created on a virtual machine. I downloaded both VMware and VM Builder per the following the guide on this page http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/20/, but ran into an error message on this step: Create a virtual machine using VMX Builder. VMX Builder includes detailed instructions. Save the generated file in "My Documents\My Virtual Machines" The error message is as follows: Run-time error '339' Component 'TABCTL32.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid Any thoughts on what I should do? I can post my INI file, however, I think this is an issue with Virtual Machine and not my nLITE ISO. Any help would be appreciated.
  7. Thanks John. Your answer clarified things for me. The link in my original post was supposed to point to Step 4 of the Beginning Users of the MSFN's Unattended Windows Guide. One follow-up question: In following your recommendation to stick with a single nLite session, at what point does one incorporate the driver packs from DriverPack.net using their third party installer called DriverPacks Base? The way I did it was to first slip stream XP SP3 into my source folder using nLite, then while nLite is still open and before integrating addons etc., I used the DriverPack Base installer to slip stream the driver packs into the XP SP3 source folder, continuing on with the rest of nLite integrations. Does that sound correct, or would I approach it in a different order?
  8. Newbie clarification question here. Is this step necessary (http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/7/SESSID=3c679e243a873fd11edad2f94c308016/) even if you have already created the ISO using nLITE? I feel like the last few screens of nLITE had me answer the exact same questions, e.g. I put in information about Name, Organization, Display settings, time zone, product key etc... Does nLITE do the above step automatically, or is creating the WINNT.SIF file necessary? It seems that there is already a WINNT.SIF file in the ISO I386 folder. Thanks

    ISO Size

I'm new to this, so bear with me. The answer to my question, I'm sure, are many. However, I'll ask it anyhow. What is the typical size of an ISO after slip streaming? I took my XP SP2 and added SP3 as well as a number of add-ons (AVG, ZoneAlarm, K-lite, VLC, Filezilla, Flash, Shockwave) and OnePiece's Post SP3 update pack. For some reason I was assuming that the resulting ISO image would be small enough to fit on a 700MB CD-RW disc. It appears that I will need to burn the ISO to a DVD with at least a 4.7 GB capacity. My ISO file is in the neighborhood of 1.2 GB in size. Does this sound plausible and what you would expect given your familiarity with this process? Thanks, INTI I've attached my Last Session INI file. What is the difference between it and the Last Session_U INI file? LAST_SESSION.INI
  10. Motivated by having done one too many reinstalls on my desktop. Looking to make the process easier in the future. In advance, thanks for your time and support.
  11. Thanks so much for all the great info provided by everybody on this web site. I'm new to slip streaming and would consider myself a hair better than a beginner when it comes to operating systems and general computer stuff. Right now I'm trying to use nLite to slipstream my Retail copy of Windows XP Professional SP2 with the recently released SP3. My question today is which Updates, Add-ons and Hot fixes should I include into the nLite slipstream process? I understand how to obtain the .exe files from the Microsoft Update web site, however, I am not sure how far back I need to go to make sure I capture everything I need. Can I assume that all updates prior to the release of SP3 are included in SP3, which would mean I could just take any update since that time? I've found some postings on this web site that seem to catalog updates for various operating systems and the respective updates: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=86450. When I slip stream from SP2 to SP3 do I focus on the updates under the heading MS WINDOWS XP PRO SP3 - (13) on the thread indicated previously. Maybe I'm making this harder than I need to. In advance, thank you for you assistance and guidance. INTI
