How to keep "hide inactive tray icons"

On some computers, it seems impossible for Windows to remember what icons to 'always hide'. The settings for all icons revert back to "hide when inactive" after I reboot the pc.

Now I installed a new pc with Windows XP SP3 and I have the problem myself. Is there any registry setting that I can modify?

In the Taskbar & Menu start properties, "Hide inactive icons" is checked. And I have set 4 icons to always hide. But after a reboot, they are back again..

I have this problem too, in my Windows XP PRO SP2, and have had since years.

I found a method, but not tried yet: this reg file remove all notification icons, that tend to become too much to be stored. After this, you need to reboot and set again which icons should stay hidden and which always shown, but your settings will finally stay saved.

Create with notepad a .reg file with this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify]
"PastIconsStream"=-
"IconStreams"=-

and double click it.
