PROBLEMCHYLD Posted September 6, 2009 Author Posted September 6, 2009 How do i install only IE 6 core files nothing more nothing less?
glaurung Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 How do i install only IE 6 core files nothing more nothing less?Download the free version of 98lite from http://www.litepc.com/get98lite.html. It will make IE an optional component on either an existing installation or on a new install, for any of 98fe, 98se, or ME.You don't need any windows 95 files to use 98lite, despite the impression you might get from the directions - that part only applies if you want the "sleek" desktop. despite the name, the "chubby" desktop (no extra files needed) works perfectly well and is quite fast.
PROBLEMCHYLD Posted September 17, 2009 Author Posted September 17, 2009 (edited) Thanks what i'm trying to do is install files that require IE 6. Once installed i want to remove the unecessary IE 6files but keep the necessary files for Outlook Express, VPN etc.... What are the files i need to keep? I also have a copy of 98lite. Edited September 17, 2009 by PROBLEMCHYLD
glaurung Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Outlook and netmeeting and VPN work just fine after using 98lite to strip out IE, because all they require is IE's HTML rendering engine, which 98lite leaves intact.I'm pretty sure 98lite supports removal of IE6 via the add/remove windows components control panel, so if necessary you can install it, install your other software, and then uninstall it. If I'm wrong, the standalone IEradicator (http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html) definitely supports removal of IE6.
the xt guy Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 98 lite definitely makes IE a removable option in the add/remove windows components. However, I remember removing IE6 (which I think was via 98 lite, I can't remember the exact circumstances now) and getting a message that Outlook Express would also be uninstalled, as OE needed some part of IE6 to function.I wanted OE off my computer as much as IE, so I had no problem in uninstalling both. (the best part of setting up a new Windows 98 installation for me was ripping out IE.)I have read that IEradicator does not remove as many bits and pieces of IE6 as 98 lite does, so perhaps that progarm still might let you keep OE functionability.
galahs Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 How does removing IE6 effect the Windows Explorer navigation?Plus I know it will make the OS safer, but does removing IE6 make Windows run or load faster?
galahs Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 This is from http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.htmlRemoves all versions of Internet Explorer from all versions of Windows 9x in 8 different languages! - INSANE!!Not for use with Windows 2000sr2 or Windows XPTiny in stature, but packs a whollop!IEradicator is a tiny, script that uses the Windows setup engine to surgically remove Internet Explorer versions 3 through 6.0 from Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium and Windows 2000(sr1).If you are one of the 70+% for which IE is the browser that floats your boat you can reinstall the version you prefer. If not, then you can bask in the inner glow of knowing you just secured your PC from all known and unknown, past and future, IE security bugs while claiming back 30+MB of closet space. Isn't it nice to have the choice? The removal process is elegant with all COM servers politely being asked to de-register themselves from the system registry using their inbuilt deinstallation routines before being eliminated from the hard disk. IEradicator then pulls out the cleaning gear and gives the registry a good polish before returning control back to you. The MS HTML Engine (shdocvw.dll and mshtml.dll) is left on the machine to provide needed functionality for other applications that render HMTL (e.g. Outlook Express) or that launch a mini-browsing window (e.g. Winamp's Mini Browser, Netmeeting's Online Directory).IEradicator now contains two versions. One version keeps all the web view shell integration intact, and the other takes all of that out for a lean and fast desktop environment. If you are hard-core, you can rid yourself of IE altogether using our great 98lite Professional.Be sure to read the accompanying text files - IEradicator means business!!
PROBLEMCHYLD Posted December 8, 2009 Author Posted December 8, 2009 (edited) 98lite does not remove all the files from IE nor does IEradicator. Edited February 5, 2010 by PROBLEMCHYLD
PROBLEMCHYLD Posted November 24, 2011 Author Posted November 24, 2011 (edited) After doing some research, in my opinion I believe 98lite does a waaaaay better job than IEradicator. What I notice is IE 5.5 SP2 core files are faster than IE 6.0 SP1 core files. IE 6.0 SP1 core files has more functions than IE 5.5 SP2 core files. Internet Connection Sharing doesn't work withIE 5.5 SP2 files but it works with IE 6.0 SP1. Below are the latest versions of core file after using 98lite. Instead of installing any version IE after using 98lite one can just update their core files. This is for people who wil not use Internet Explorer at all. My question is do i register the files or just replace them. Edited November 25, 2011 by PROBLEMCHYLD
ShadeTreeLee Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 My question is do i register the files or just replace them.Both. After making sure that you have the latest versions released in cumulative IE updates from MS you then register them so that "they" as a group know which other ones are around and playing in the same puddle with each other via registry entries made during registration. Among the various cumulative update packages released, MS would move a function from one file to another, most often due to a buffer overun exploit in same said function and unless they all were changed out together (as a cumulative package), the problem function could get lost or duplicated (neither of which are desirable or functional). Most of the files will fail to register as they don't have the capability built into them. But no harm is done trying all of them - those that do have the capability will and those that don't won't. Most files that do, will say so among their right click properties sheet under the Version tab and "other version information" section. Look for an entry that says OLE SelfRegister. If it's there, that file can be registered via Regsvr32.exe.http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249873http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=207132A common mistake in the thinking process involves not using the latest update files because since you are NOT using IE at all, it shouldn't matter, right? FATAL error there - the files are there, they ARE being used by the OS and CAN be used by published methods to take control over your machine away from you entirely. Without you knowing about it in most cases. This was gospel while 98 was supported but since it isn't anymore we are always vunerable to published exploits anyway, the only thing we can do about that is to make them a smaller number of exploits by using the last update available.WinUP site is no longer working for win98 users, but links to direct downloads seem to still be working. The last IE 6 SP1 cumulative KB916281 for example:http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/IE6.0sp1-KB916281-Windows-98-ME-x86-ENU_39e4cfd60d6b77424d640afab75c3a5.exeIt's name in real life is IE6.0sp1-KB916281-Windows-98-ME-x86-ENU.exeFor 6.0 SP1 OE the last cumulative was 837009:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=925628BD-1B5F-4B21-8DB6-EDE1C73F97B5&displaylang=enI too am thinking about using Opera, with IE 6, I get run off like a curr dog regularly (we only built the friggin internet as it is today with it and this is the thanks we get for that). Very interested in your results and issues. Is OE borked by 98lite? Last IE 5.50 SP2 updates are:IE http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=8561 OE http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ac1a8632-8b71-4d90-beb0-8c3f1a23889d&DisplayLang=en
PROBLEMCHYLD Posted November 25, 2011 Author Posted November 25, 2011 (edited) Both. I'm going to release 2 version of the U98SESP3. One version with IE 5.5 SP2 core files and the other with IE6 SP1 core files. This pack, hopefully will help people. I don't like IE and 98lites does the job to get rid of it. People without 98lite can still benefit though. But the core versions is aimed @ the 98lite users. BTW, Internet Connection Sharing does work with IE 5.5 SP2 and Win98 is really fast. The installation would be so simple.1. Install Win98 with 98lite2. Install drivers3. Install service pack4. install desired software. Edited November 26, 2011 by PROBLEMCHYLD

PROBLEMCHYLD Posted November 27, 2011 Author Posted November 27, 2011 (edited) After a clean install with 98lite ripping out Internet Explorer 5.01, I have found these files to have no registry keys. They are left on the system. Do I register them or leave them as is?I also noticed while testing IE 6 SP1 files, explorer does not keep its windows position.I have to keep maximizing whenever I open a folder.BROWSELC.DLLENHSIG.DLLIERNONCE.DLLINSENG.DLLMSHTMLER.DLLMSIDNTLD.DLLSAGE.DLLSENS.DLLSHD401LC.DLLSHDOCLC.DLLSHFOLDER.DLLSHLWAPI.DLL Edited November 28, 2011 by PROBLEMCHYLD
PROBLEMCHYLD Posted November 27, 2011 Author Posted November 27, 2011 I took the 98lite approach and only registered the files that was already registered. New update in signature.
