Vista SP1 slipstream failure

I've had extreme problems to install sp1 in vista64 ultimate. Fresh installs and either standalone sp1 or through windows update fails at some point. I've experienced looping and numerous error messages. I thought that slipstreaming could be an alternative but i've ran into problems here too. The integration phase finish with an error message: Unable to... no changes made (or something like that). What gives? I hope it isn't because i don't have sp1 installed in my system (that is the issue i'm trying to solve). I have vista x64 retail swedish and sp1 x64 swedish.

Worked on second try. Trimmed down image from 4.3Gb to 3.6Gb. Installed in WMware Workstation without problems. Now I just have to boot from another HDD and delete the vista installation while copying public/personal folders to a backup directory. I need to do like this as I don't have enough space on another disk or partition. What happens if I install this VistaLite copy over the existing one? Is it possible? Or do I get duplicate directories (Public and Public-ComputerName, Windows, Window.old for example)?

*Note on the test installation on WMWare. When trying to install the available updates after SP1 the following happens: Stops at 3/3, 0 % done, reboot and continous loop. What is it with Vista and updates? Should I install the updates one by one chronologically? How do I manage to update without all these errors? Windows update is a joke!
