Kiki Burgh
hello! i would like to seek your advise on how to address the prompt of installing this particular update: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB953838) ... prior to reformat, this prompt was already present but despite automatically installing it via windows update or downloading the update separately and installing it by hand, the prompt always come back ... now i have already reformatted and let windows get the updates and this has once again come up (despite the same efforts) ... both winupdateslist and add/remove programs show it already installed ... the only way to get rid of it is to just untick this particular update & to never show again ... any feedback will be greatly appreciated
cluberti
If you look at windowsupdate.log in %windir%\, why does it say it has found a need for this update? If it is installed, the Internet Explorer files in both %windir%\system32 and \system32\dllcache (like urlmon.dll and wininet.dll) should be either version 7.0.6000.16705 (GDR) or 7.0.6000.20861 (QFE). You can see the entire list at the KB article for MS08-045 if you want to check. Usually what I find in these scenarios that the files in dllcache are not being updated during the install, due to a failed upgrade. Or, in some instances, people who "integrate" IE7 into an install via nLite run into the problem because the files in dllcache are NOT upgraded to IE7 versions during the "integration", thus you end up with IE7 files in \system32, and IE6 files in \system32\dllcache, and the update will fail to update files in \dllcache (because they don't match the installed product), and thus update.exe will continue to say this update needs to be installed. Kiki Burgh
appreciate the reply cluberti! i just want to share to that now after i unchecked the prompt for install of KB953838, it now prompts me to install Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB950759) - MS08-031 which was supposed to have been superseded by KB953838 (... i'm thinking if this would be the trend, then the next prompt would be for an earlier update - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB947864) ... then so on ...) ... and yes, i integrated ie7 (via HFSLIP & i'd assume the process is the same if done via nLite) ... would if help, if i attach here my WindowsUpdate.txt? how could this be addressed? thanks in advance
cluberti
Did you check the file versions like I asked?

cluberti
OK, so the files are there. Please post your \Windows\windowsupdate.log file so we can see why it's determining you need these hotfixes (you should not, so something's amiss). frankwaanders
Any update on this? I'm having exactly the same problems, with the same (normal looking) messages in de Windowsupdate log.
cluberti
Well, it's saying it found files on the system with lesser versions than the hotfix files - do 2 things if possible:1. Make the following registry modifications and reboot:Key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\TraceValue: FlagsType: REG_DWORDData: 00000007Value: LevelType: REG_DWORDData: 000000042. Search the entire system for all of the files updated for IE7 on XP listed in the latest update to see if these files exist *anywhere* else outside of the \windows\system32 and \windows\system32\dllcache folders. Windows Updates is scanning the system and finding at least one IE file on the system that is not a correct version.
Kiki Burgh
thanks cluberti ... will try your suggestions ... @ frankwaanders, hope your issue gets resolved too ... if by any chance, you manage to fix it, kindly share your findings here too ... mara-
Any of you with this problem have VistaPack installed? If yes that is your problem. You'll have to stop reloader from reloading on every reboot.Cheers
Kiki Burgh
sorry i do not have vista pack installed ... anyways, i just like to share ... i tried uninstalling all 1e7 related updates (KB947864-IE7, KB950759-IE7) via add/remove programs and i got warning about dependencies to the specific hotfix/update i was about to uninstall ... that some applications/updates would be affected ... i just proceeded and restarted the system ... then i restarted my system ... checked MU & it prompted for KB98127-v2 + latest roots certificate + defender update + windows search ... as of this writing, no update to install any update has prompted yet (it shows in add/remove programs (under Windows Internet Explorer 7 - Software Updates), only these 2: Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB938127-v2) & Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB953838) - both installed the same day) ... what about those cumulative updates that were uninstalled (KB947864-IE7, KB950759-IE7)? it'd seem i do not need to reinstall these ...thanks! frankwaanders
Okay, I also un-installed all IE7 patches, and thereafter installed all available patches from MU.Now, there are no remaining essential updates, so the problem looks solved! mfm
I also had this problem and just solved it by downloading IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe 14.7mb, at the end of install it said some updates could not be installed. When I rebooted Kb953838 was installed I also was having problems with wmp 11 so downloaded wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe 25mb.Discovered some interesting stuff below which I'll try in a virtual machine later, and post results.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 http://help.wugnet.com/windows/Error-Code-...pict629042.html Edited October 10, 2008 by mfm
