Can you install server 2k3 with a 2k8 license?

I have to implement a new server for accounting and payroll software that is not yet compatible with server 2k8. The company does not want to spend the money on new software at this time. The software talking to our venders is only 2k3 compatible. Thanks though that answers the question.

It depends on how the license was purchased. If it is an OEM or Retail package it is not likely that it would have downgrade rights. If it was a volume license purchase it will have downgrade rights and you can request a downgraded volume license media kit directly from Microsoft. Let me know if you have any questions I can try to clear them up.

Thanks for your help. The license that came with the IBM server is an OEM copy. We have a meeting with Microsoft this afternoon we'll see if they can help us out.
