Bob Ryan Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 (edited) My computer was recently attacked by a virus and I was forced to reformat using the windows Media Center Edition CD's that came with the computer; However, during the reformatting process it kept asking for the Window's XP professional CD's. For the most part it worked when I stuck in the Media Center CD's as it asked for the professional (Please insert Windows XP Professional CD 1=Windows XP Media Center Edition CD 1, same for CD 2) However several Basic programs and files seemed to have been somehow skipped .Here are the two programs that I know for certain were not installed:Internet Explorer (I managed to get this by copying the files straight of the CD after logging into windows)Terminal Services (Program that, for one, shows what users are running the processes in the task manager. Have not been able to find.)I occasionally run into a BSOD, and while I can tell what caused it, I cannot tell why or offer any explanation as to how the problem could have happened. One example: I use Opera (A web browser) and I started downloading a file (Rebirth RO install file, Game file, shouldn't cause any problems). This didn't cause any problems, however when I ran windows update I decided to pause the download and restart the comp so the updates would take effect. After it restarted I hit "Resume download" which worked fine. However after rebooting one more time, any time I try to restart the download, Opera Freezes and any attempt to close it/shut it down, even using the task manager to simply end the process, results in the blue screen of death. Finally, I do have automatic update running and have all the current updates, with the exception of XP Service Pack 3. As a side not the computer has also occasionally failed to start up properly and restarted, consequently bringing up the quesiton of how to start up windows upon restart. submix8c Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 (edited) I assume you mean "reinstall", not "reformat".A proper "clean reinstall" would involve first deleting said partition (when the Where Do You Want To Install screen comes up), then allowing the installation to (re)create the partition, format it, then proceed with installation.Try it again as above. Should have worked. Roughly another 45-minute repeat task.Don't forget to Press F5 when msg "Press F6" shows and select "ACPI Computer" otherwise auto-shutdown won't work (depends on the type of CPU/MOBO you have). One more thing... don't interrupt the Update process... let it finish. That reboot was not a good thing! Edited August 24, 2008 by submix8c

That reboot was not a good thing! No no, I didn't interupt the update process. After the updates were finished downloading I rebooted FOR the updates and interupted a download of a game file not in any way related to windows. But yes, I reinstalled windows XP but formatted the drive in the process, as you've described above.I'll give it another shot, btw thx for the reply.
