Script to fill in a Word template

I was given a Word file that is a form or template that must be filled in with current text every week. But I really don't want to use MSWord to do it. I would rather enter the text in my favorite editor and feed the text to a script that will generate the completed document.

I get the impression that VBA, or active script, or hopefully even Perl could do this using the VBA API.

First, can anyone confirm that it is possible to do what I want to do?

Second, can anyone point to any example script?
