These all seem like good suggestions, especially smart computing and not doing irresponsible things. But you didn't mention the best suggestion of all--use an operating system that doesn't beg to be infected. That is, don't use Windows. There are lots of enjoyable "distros" of Linux, many of which have been very friendly to novices for years. You can compare and check them out at DistroWatch. And of course Linux isn't alone. There's FreeBSD and it's distros, MacOS and maybe even Solaris.

Whever I ask corporate IT to do something, inevitably they ask me for my password. Is this normal practice? I suppose IT administrator passwords can access everything anyway, but any method of giving it seems like a security violation: emailing it, writing it on a sticky note or saying it out loud. I'm just wondering about the way things are normally done in other companies.

I was given a Word file that is a form or template that must be filled in with current text every week. But I really don't want to use MSWord to do it. I would rather enter the text in my favorite editor and feed the text to a script that will generate the completed document. I get the impression that VBA, or active script, or hopefully even Perl could do this using the VBA API. First, can anyone confirm that it is possible to do what I want to do? Second, can anyone point to any example script?
