Registry File Failure AND ntkrnlmp.exe error code 7

My dell notebook inspiron 2650 crashed (Blue Screen) on me.....

**It gave me this msg (STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file):\System Root\System32\Config\SECURITY or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable)**

......I tried to reboot it with the Windows XP CD.....but my computer will not boot from CD so I tried to boot with the Windows XP 6 floppy disk setup....but I get this error code (ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded the error code is 7).....So I tried using the single boot floppy disk using files ntldr,ntdetect,boot.ini.....but the computer says "No Operating System Found"...............

what do I do???? Please someone help!!!!!!!

It is VERY strange that the computer won't boot from CD.

However, something you can try is getting this:

and create a DOS boot floppy capable of reading and writing NTFS.

Very quick instructions:

Once you succeeded booting, you need to change directory until you get to your %Systemdir%\System32\config\ directory, (usually C:\windows\system32\config):

C:
[ENTER]
CD windows
[ENTER]
CD system32
[ENTER]
CD config
[ENTER]
DIR
[ENTER]

There should be there files:

SECURITY

SECURITY.BAK

SECURITY.LOG

Rename SECURITY to SECURITY.BAD

REN SECURITY  SECURITY.BAD
[ENTER]

Copy SECURITY.BAK to SECURITY

Copy /b SECURITY.BAK  SECURITY
[ENTER]

Try rebooting without the floppy (crossing your fingers ).

Hi all ... searching thru this forum, I found this thread. My HP laptop recently got this similar type of STOP failure. The full BSOD is:

My problem though is all I have are system recovery CD's. The OS is XP-Home (SP2). But I DO have access to an XP-Pro disc. Will that work? I just don't know if I will be able to use those instructions without an XP-Home installation CD. I have been Googling like mad searching on everything I can find about this error, including posts in other forums across the internet.

Jaclaz's instructions above seem less tedious, although I've never tried that Avira NTFS4DOS though (nor UBCD4Win). At the moment of this writing, I am running a hard drive self test via the laptop's BIOS to be sure it's ok. If possible, my goal is to fully regain the current OS installation on the drive and not have to reinstall the OS, as well as keep the personal contents/files intact. Please help, anyone, thanks.

UPDATE:

Well, the harddrive self test passed including SMART (took 40 minutes).

I forgot to say that Safe Mode or Last Known Config at startup doesn't work. It will always BSOD the same failure and then restart, until I manual shut off. The possible cause of this in the first place was my laptop overheating, thus corrupting memory and harddrive transfers.

Most probably you can re-create a XP Home CD from the files within your Recovery CD, or from the \I386 directory on your hard disk (you will need either the said NTF4DOS or a PE of some kind and a USB stick or USB hard disk to get the latter ones).

Ok thanks. Darn it, that's more stuff to learn and do before I may be able to get this laptop back up and running, heh. Could take at least a week. So are we/you saying that XP Pro CD may not work when trying to get into a Recovery Console? Are the Home and Pro CD's/files really that different?

Btw, I need to copy all my personal files off this drive first before I try reconstructing the registry to make it boot again. The drive only has one owner (admin), with password. Will slaving the drive at another PC and taking ownership of all the files/folders (so I can get to my stuff to backup) affect it from booting properly when I change it back to a master drive?

Wouldn't it be easier on the "other PC" to set up (temporarily) an admin account with same login and password as the "dead" laptop?

Sounds like a good idea, never heard or thought of that before, thank you. What I can probably do is put this corrupted drive into an external USB2 drive enclosure and run it off there from my other XP laptop, which uses the same login name and password. I'm going to have to get another external drive though as the working XP laptop doesn't have anymore space for backup. Will that work? Also, I need to clear up something... is USB2 faster than UDMA/IDE 100/133? My guess is yes.

(in the dark). Thank god I'm here. Lately in Windows 2000 I have been trying to manipulate files through DOS or some boot disk that runs DOS because the computer is boot looping. Regular Bootdisks crash saying "ntkrnmp.exe failed to load code 7" and when bootlooping it says lsass.exe terminated code 128 (never goes all the way into window). I've tryed 2 different paid for boot disks which think I have an XP. Ready anyday now to simply put my 2000 CD in and reinstall the dang thing. I believe I can get some type of command prompt with those disks so I will now see if I can change these files.
