hgary1 Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 I have been trying to get windows to install with Nlite 1.41 and 1.4.5b since Ryan Update Pack v2.2.1 came out... All I get during the installation at T-13 minutes I start to get error messages with the following filesPath \Windows\System32\Rundll32.exe : * Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item (OK) Furthermore I get the same error with the following filenames.... Fixmapi, exe odbcconf, exe mstinit, exe regsvr32,exe logagent.exe unregmp2.exe Cmd,exe uploadlb/binariesWindows Media Player migrate, exe etc.... I let the installation complete and found I had no rights to access or change anything, I mean nothing, no access to the right mouse click on desktop, add remove programs, nothing in the control panel or anythingNow I have seen similar problems with windows, but not with Nlite or Ryan VM integrator, I have used them both and getting the same results, for the update pack v2.2.1 all versions final and beta.I used the integrator for WMP v.99i by itself and within Nlite resulting with the same results. I also included IE7v2.03 and 2.04 as well as IE8b1 and the beta addons from RyanVM website.I had tried various orders of integrating the update packs and IE7 & 8 and finalizing the addons and customization with Nlite I have removed only 3 items from the original disc from XP pro, which is the MSN explore, Tour , and sample music, the funny thing is, is that I have been using other versions of the product of Nlite since v .7 and Ryan VM update packs since V2.01 in all this time I have never had this problem. Sorry if this seem lengthly but I just want a a solution and I have seen others asking questions without enough information. Someone told me to integrate the files.... 1 Update pack2. nuhi Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 It is something integrated that causes the issue.Probably in combination. Try to exclude those that you don't need, why integrate stuff just because someone told you to. Start from the clean xp sp2, add what you like. For starters it is good to add update pack, then test in virtual pc.
PoitNarf Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 I get the same error message:Rundll32.exe "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."Happens during the device installation part of windows setup. This error message only comes up when doing an upgrade from 2000 to XP and does not happen if I do a clean install. I'm running it again so I know which timestamps in the setup log files to look for, but I'm just curious if anyone else has run into this issue before.

tomidis Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 I have been trying to get windows to install with Nlite 1.41 and 1.4.5b since Ryan Update Pack v2.2.1 came out... I let the installation complete and found I had no rights to access or change anything, I mean nothing, no access to the right mouse click on desktop, add remove programs, nothing in the control panel or anything....I also getting exact this error messagesI'm trying to integrate hotfixes to winxp x64 sp2, and these errors appears only when I nlited under xp x64 os (administrator acc)when I nlited xp x64 sp2 under xp x86 os, then everything is okAnyone knows why is this happening??
johnhc Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 tomidis, I am running XP x64 and have no such problems. So, please attach (not paste) your Last Session.ini. Make sure to always start with a fresh copy of your CD files/folders, do all your work in one nLite session and integrate only one SP. Please report when you have a solution, so others can benefit. Enjoy, John.
tomidis Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 hi johnhc, now I get this problem also under x86 os when nliting xp x64 sp2I always use fresh copy of xp files, and use nlite only onceI read somewhere about permissions and ownership, so I checked my folder with xp files on d: disk and it was owner by system ?!, so I changed whole disk d: to administrator owner (I'm running xp as administrator) and all permissions to administrator acc, and then tested again but with no success I removed all KB hotfixes and updates only for faster testing but errors remainsLast_Session.ini
johnhc Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 tomidis, I have not seen this before and don't remember the old thread you posted under. I suspect it is not really a permission problem, but I don't know what it is. When you sayI removed all KB hotfixes and updates only for faster testing but errors remainsWhat errors remain - all? Screen shots would be great if you can get them. I hope you are running under a virtual system. If not, please consider VMware Server or VirtualBox. Both support x64 and both are free. VMware is huge (>500 MB) but I have not used VirtualBox. It does not look like you really need the Uxtheme patch, so try without it and continue to leave out all your hot fixes till you have a running base. BTW, I see you are using an English version of Windows but in what language are you running nLite? More information is better and screen shots would be great. Also, please tell us about your source. Is it OEM, Retail, Recovery or what? Is it modified by any other program (RyanVM, etc) or anyone else? Please attach you Rundll32.exe so I can compare to mine. Enjoy, John.
tomidis Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 My processor and BIOS too, doesn't support hardware virtualization so unfortunately I cannot use VirtualBox to test my images Everytime I burn image to cd-rw and then test "live" install, and this is really painfull process Otherwise I use VirtualBox to test x86 imagesSource is: en_win_xp_pro_x64_with_sp2_vl_X13-41611.iso downloaded from MSDNnlite language is left croatian, sorryIsključeno means offYes I use sometimes english xp, and sometimes croatian muiI also tried turn off Uxtheme patch and nothingI use exactly the same Last Session.ini like in nliting x86 XP Pro SP3Errors starts exactly @T-13I cannot post screenshot because I don't run image under virtual machinebut errors are exactly what hgary1 posted in 1st postC:\Windows\System32\Rundll32.exe : Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item(OK)when I click OK another error appear but with diferrent exeFixmapi.exeodbcconf.exemstinit.exeregsvr32.exelogagent.exeunregmp2.exeCmd.exeand so on... I didn't count how many errors appears, but approx. 20 to 30 errors and then installation continues but after first logon I cannot start anything, allways getting that error message
johnhc Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 tomidis, I am really suspicious of your source and how SP2 was added to it by MSDN. I would suggest writing the original ISO to a CD and see if it will install. If it does, then make it only unattended using nLite and see it that works. I know it is painful, but little steps are what we need to get at the problem(s). Again, please attach your Rundll32.exe file (from nLited folder) so I can look at it. I assume you have extracted your ISO so nLite can work with it. Please post a Windows Explorer screen shot of the folder that came out of the extraction process. Enjoy, John.
tomidis Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 (edited) here is my unpacked source isoI have MUI inside $OEM$ but cmdlines.txt is processed after T-13 and errors @T-12here is rundll32.exe and wrundll32.exe from nlited image but the files are not modified by nliterundll32.rarI also tried install from original iso and installation finishes normally without errors Edited October 12, 2009 by tomidis
johnhc Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 tomidis, both of your files have the same hash as the ones on my system, so they are the same. When you installed your ISO, I assume you left the $OEM$ folder on the disk - true?If not, try that and post a screen shot of what is in your $OEM$ folder. Continuing, try running nLite only to do unattended install. Do no removals, tweaks, options or patches. Enjoy, John.
tomidis Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 johnhc, can you confirm is it result the same if you run nlite under x86 or x64 os, when processing xp x64 ??I'm not sure what exactly I do, but last night I get one install without errors (Last Session.ini allways the same), but one update I left for test SVCPACK wasn't installed I'll test it more and post when I'm sure what's the problem
johnhc Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 tomidis, I think it has come down to being able to run nLite under XP for x64 if you are not slipping an SP. This x64 thread has a method to get around this restriction. What was the update that was not installed? Several updates will not install using nLite. Enjoy, John.
