WPI 'Installation' directory for Office 2003

In the Office 2003 Advanced Installation guide (http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/50/), the author, Alanoll states that:

Copy the contents of your Office 2003 disc to: C:XPCD$OEM$$1installApplicationsOffice2003

When I created an automated WPI installation for XP with unattended Office 2003, I copied the (shrunk) contents of Office 2003 into the directory WPI/Install and the installation of XP with unattended Office 2003 worked great!

My questions are: Why is it 'recommended' that Office 2003 is copied into ...$OEM$$1installApplicationsOffice2003

Is there something 'special' about this directory or directory path? Do I get 'special features' when I use the $OEM$ directory and its subdirectories. As you may be able to tell, I do not fully understand what is 'special' about the $OEM$ directory (other than using it to install cmdlines.txt and RunWPI.inf), and the $1 directory!

Please help me understand the significance of these '$ sign' directories in the WPI application. Thank you...Vaughn !:-)

Well - I (finally) found the "Reference" documents that tell me all that I need to know about $OEM$, etc.
