P5W DH flash of 45nm cpu

Hey all,

This is my first post, but the advice I've seen on other postings is great, so here goes:

I have just built a new comp with an Asus P5W DH, an Intel C2D 8400, and a GeForce Superclocked 8800GT. The video card doesn't really matter, I'm just really excited!

Here's the problem - The 8400 is built on the 45nm architecture, which the P5W supports via a bios update. Is there any way to flash the bios without having to install a different processor first? The guy at the computer store told me I'll have to install my old processor (a pentium 4), flash the bios, and then switch it for the 8400.

I would love to somehow get around this step. Any ideas?

Also, I actually bought this mobo used on eBay, so I don't know if he has already flashed it or not. I will email him, but I have no idea when/if he will respond. So, is there any danger in powering up the computer with the 8400? If the bios hasn't been flashed will it just not work, or could I do any harm?

Thank you.

P.S. Sorry if this is covered, but I read the first 10 pages of this forum, and searched for p5w and found nothing.

Welcome to the forum Wannie,

You can not damage much by starting up your computer with the E8400 in it, however, to avoid taking a risk of de-assembling the setup I would use an older CPU first. What kind of P4 is it? Is it by any chance a 5xxor 6xx series? Then use that CPU first to update your BIOS.
