catcher33 Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 I just bought a vista laptop and i can't get it to access the shared files on my XP desktop. The desktop can access the public folder on the vista laptop and on another XP laptop. The printer , connected to the XP desktop, is available to all machines. The XP laptop has no problem accessing shared files on the XP desktop , and the vista can access the shared files on the XP laptop. The desktop is connected directly to a wireless router both laptops are wireless. I've tried everything I've found in other forums, nothings helped! Windows firewall is off. Any help would be great.
catcher33 Posted February 13, 2008 Author Posted February 13, 2008 I just found that if I add a new 'network location' [\\computername\shareddocs\] under 'computer in the start menu' on the vista I can access that file from 'computer' but not trough 'network' ?
spacesurfer Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 If you can access files from "Computer" but not the network, you probably don't have link layer topology protocol (LLTP) installed. It's quite possible that your laptop is up to date with the latest XP updates and may have LLTP and hence can be seen by Vista, but not the desktop.Search MS website for LLTP and download and install. this will make the desktop "visible" to Vista. But again, if you type the computer name in the address bar of "Computer" using "\\computername" you should be able to access all the shared resources.
