richandtan Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 hi people.please can someone help me.I just got back on the internet after a while, updated all my software, virus s/w etc.. and updated my version of real player and somewhere along the lines - I am pretty much sure but not 100% after I updated real player - when I visited a web site and tried to download a mpeg file it defaulted to file to mp2 format in the save as box although still as a mpeg 'type' with no way to save it as it IS !?!?!?If that sounds confusing... basically what happens isright click mpeg or mpg file to be downloadedsave as box pops up with destination file name, type etc...BUT although file is a mpeg or mpg file the destination file name i.e. save as file name has defaulted to filename.mp2 !!??I have tried uninstalling real player but it hasn't fixed it.Is driving me mad, can any help me please !!!many many thanks in advance.Tarnia
Mijzelf Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Browser downloads generally just follow the extension in the URL. Are you sure the file is not already named ?.mp2 on internet?
j7n Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 MP2 is usually assigned to audio-only MPEGs. If there is video in your files, just rename them to *.mpg later. It's not a big deal actually. Even if you did download 200 of these files, a mass rename tool such as Total Commander can do the job. I don't believe that the format has been changed, only filename.
richandtan Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 Yes they are def .mpg or .mpeg in the URL I'm not dat stoopid !! lol.You are right, you can rename them later... it just really driving me mad!!! and it wasn't like that before and I cant find a way to change it back !!!!Arrggghhh !!!
richandtan Posted February 26, 2008 Author Posted February 26, 2008 (edited) for those of you who are interested:...a friend sorted it out for me.it was a registry setting where mpg was set to type mpeg and mpeg was set tp type mp2so mp2 was the default type for all mpg and mpeg types.dont know what changed it in the first place tho Edited February 26, 2008 by richandtan
