High CPU Usage

These processes are always sorta high like this when I'm not doing anything right when I turn the computer on. WTF?

When I just leave the computer sit it goes to like 15% or 11% then jumps to 40% for a bit then back down. Why....

Short Answer

Do the following:

Start > Control Panel > Classic View > Problem Reports and Solutions > Clear Solution and Problem History > (Confirm that you want to clear the history) > Close the control panel

Id try the third fix first because it seems to be the only one that isnt a knee-jerk reaction method (its not working right so delete/disable it) instead of finding the source of the problem

if that doesn't work, there seems to be no shortage of people with opinions on how to fix it

I'd personally blame the Windows Updates service, as it lives in an svchost.exe process and invokes trustedinstaller.exe to scan for updates. If you haven't already, I'd disable that service and only enable it once a month to check for updates, then disable it again.

Where would I disable trustedinstaller.exe? I didn't see it in "services.msc" It would help a lot if the annoying pop up would just go away when you turn windows update off. I'd keep it off but I can't stand that. Or did it stop annoying you in Vista?

Actually, Vista SP1 severely limited trustedinstaller.exe, so it no longer chews up my CPU. I've been running SP1 for a little while now, so I've not noticed it anymore, but I do remember just disabling WU and the security center popups before SP1.
