XP laptop video resolution issue

My latest laptop began as a SONY VGN-FZ240E with VISTA.I wanted dual boot VISTA + XP Pro.Through an error I deleted the VISTA so with help from forum member Geek I installed XP PRO.

I use 800x600 resolution at times. Before buying this cptr I checked to see that I could use 800x600 video and it would "cover" the ENTIRE screen.Under VISTA,this was possible but when using the INTEL XP

graphics driver for the particular Intel chipset, when I go to 800x600,with the XP driver, the video does NOT fill the complete screen;I see a much smaller active window.I can only see a complete screen fill at the highest resolution 1280x800.Again,as noted, under VISTA I could fill the entire laptop screen but for some reason not when I use XP.

It seems to me I have seen some VISTA laptops where user could adjust aspect ratio.

Maybe i'm wrong, but 800x600 is a 4:3 resolution, and your laptop has a widescreen. Therefore, you will have to use a widescreen resolution to fill the screen. I suggest you use 1280x800, since that is probably your screens native resolution anyway.

nah ive seen laptops that will show the entire screen at full but only show a lower resolutions in the middle of the screen -I usually see it in windows xp setup part 1 (the blue with grey bar on bottom part) but it usually corrects itself once you get the drivers loaded. were you able to get the drivers to load that i listed? If so, look it the intel control panel inside display options for 'scaling' options. I know exactly where they are in Nvidia chipsets but i dont have anything here thats running intel video at the moment. anyways, scaling will allow you to scale the image output by the OS to the native resolution of your LCD (even if it looks stretchy)

Hope Im doing this right so don't get criticized again!

There were two Intel XP graphics files for my chipset;14311.exe and 1431.exe(hope I remembered numbers).I believe the 14311 is a beta and says it's for developers.I installed the Intel 1431 graphics file.I have seen at least some VISTA-running laptops where there was an option to apparently scale as you suggest. When the very cptr I now have XP Pro on ,was in the store as a VISTA "box," I could do some adjustment so as to fill screen when 800 x600 was selected as resolution so..I guess I have to find

a way to scale.I'll try installing the other Intel vid drvr and see what happens.I guess most folks don't care about 800x600!

OK,"Geek," you're right!!Opening the Intel graphics folder/program on the task bar showed a "no border"option.

Thanks for the suggestion!
