Help with information recovery.

First off I am not sure if this will go in this forum or not, but the OS on the hard drive I am working on is XP Home so I thought it made sense. I am trying to recover information from a hard drive that has XP Home on it and was password protected by the previous owner (my sister in-law) she gave me the password that was used so I have it. But the computer, an HP, has a fried motherboard and will not boot. So I pulled the drive and attached to my Apricorn Drive Wire, then to my Vista Laptop and it sees it as an external drive so that I can view the contents of the drive. When I go to move it Vista tells me that I do not have correct permission to move it. I have already attempted to take ownership of the files through Vista, still won't allow me to move them. She has already purchased a new HP with Vista Home Prem. on it and would like her file from the old computer on the new one. Most of the people I deal with don't protect there home desktops she thought she needed to.

I searched already and couldn't find any really relevant information on this.

Thanks.
