InstallUtil.exe error & missing winupdate balloon/sheild/icon

I've spent a few days working a new build of XP (probably the last before SP3 comes out) wiht SP2, IE7, WMP11 and all the updates to now. My build order was this :

XP + SP2
Boogly WMP11 slipstreamer with no updates

Then nLite with all this lot (note all the wmp11 addons (the slipstreamer failed to add the kb936782 one I think so I pulled them all out of the slipstreamer to nLite here) and some uptodate addons I found in winupdate on previous build and a couple of addons)

The times taken for all these parts were :
update 2.1.11 9m
update 2.1.11.13 2m
mmc3 < 1m
dx9 1m
ie7 1m
hotfixes 2m
wmp11 hotfixes 1m
addons < 1m
compressing cabinets 10m

Then I run nLite again and do all my tweaks/cutting down. Times taken were :
Uncompressing cabinets 1m
Unknown stuff 1m
Compressing cabinets 8m
Unknown stuff (sfcfiles appearing in build folder) 1m

That was using nLite 1.4beta (I've downloaded the 1.4final now)

I had to fiddle a few things so setup only asked me for pcname/adminpw and didn't run the oobe so no being bugged to make new users, and turned logon screen to classic not welcome.

However - I have the following 2 problems I've never had before I need to solve before I can really use this cd!

1 - When I first logon after installing, I get a 1 to 3 error beeps and a window pops up saying "InstallUtil.exe failed to initialise properly, error 0xC0000135". What's that? Some WMP11 patch failing to run? I rebooted the system and it didn't happen again. EverythingI tested was fine - IE7 ran ok (though it went to the ie7 firstrun setting thing but that can't really be helped, I have that removed via regfiles at logon for all networks anyway), WMP11 ran ok (and didn't give me any setup options on first run) so hey.

2 - I set the windows update options to be "download and notify for install" and the yellow ! sheild went away. I then ran windows update to see what was there. Just messenger, the .net's, the latest malicious removal tool and certificate updates I think. Sorted! I then went to reboot (as mentioned above to see if it would error on logon again) and shutdown was giving me the options to install updates then shutdown. Wait - why was there no yellow icon by the clock to let me view/install the updates myself? That's strange. And after the reboot, there was still no yellow icon. As if there were no updates. But as proved by going to the msupdate site there were, and clearly these were already downloaded ready to install so what happened to the 'notify' part of "download and notify"? :/

So ok I've downloaded hotfix kb943460 and kb890830 but I thouht Ricks_GenuineAdvantage_AddOn_71107.7z would be taking care of the WGA update? I can't find anyway to download the wga update myself or any more recent addons for it?

Also I can't find any threads besides this one ( http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5557 ) about the update balloon/icon disappearing - but I never had this problem before! I can't find anything on the rvm forums either :( Neither can I find anything about installutil.exe on rvm forums or msfn forums. Typically my last problems seem to be stickers ><

A quick google around shows InstallUtil.exe to be something to do with installing services? So the firstboot firstlogon it's trying to install some services and failing maybe? I've not had this problem on previous build installs, and it doesn't bother be on subsequent boots/logons O_o

Noone knows about the winupdate alert icon missing? Apparently I'm not the only one having the problem surely someone knows something? :(

And as for InstallUtil.exe, surely someone knows what is attempting to happen during the firstboot firstlogon (installing services?) so would know where to look or what might be the problem. I've not had either of these problems on older nLite results yet these are the only 2 I have left now e_e

First thing that I noticed is that you are integrating addon for IE7 and hotfix for IE7. You can't do this. nLite directly replaces files in XP source and addon don't. This means that you integrated IE7 hotifix into source which don't have IE7 integrated. Why don't you integrate IE7 using nLite? Just add it on list with hotfixes. Make sure that it is on the top in the list. Also why do you separately integrate WMP11? Install latest WMP Slipstreamer and copy main executable into nLite folder. Now add WMP11 in nLite's hotfixes page and nLite will automatically detect WMP Sliptreamer and will use it for integration (make sure that WMP11 is above it's hotfixes on the list). Also you are using too much hotfixes for WMP11. Some of it are replaced with new ones (some of it are obsolete). You only need:

- WindowsMedia11-KB929399-v2-x86-INTL

- WindowsMedia11-KB936782-x86-ENU

- WindowsMedia11-KB939683-x86-ENU

Also, don't run nLite more times. Why to do that? It can just cause more problems. Do all you need to do in only one run of nLite.

Hope this will solve your problems.

Cheers ;)

Ok I'm having a few problems following you here

First thing that I noticed is that you are integrating addon for IE7 and hotfix for IE7. You can't do this. nLite directly replaces files in XP source and addon don't. This means that you integrated IE7 hotifix into source which don't have IE7 integrated. Why don't you integrate IE7 using nLite? Just add it on list with hotfixes. Make sure that it is on the top in the list.

So ... what's the difference with addons and hotfixes? Hotfixes nLite integrates int windows, doesn't it integrate the addon content too? It doesn't seem to do it after installing so it must integrate them? Infact surely it does as all the RVM update packs etc are just a bundle of hotfixes? o.o I was told to use the IE7 addon instead of integrating IE7 directly (which I used to do) because then I woudln't need to add all the hotfixes that were in the addon? o.o

I didn't realise nLite uses the WMP11 slipstreamer if you put it in the nLite directory either!

As for hotfixes being obsolete, I don't know how I can know which ones I need and which are obsolete :( If there was just a list somewhere saying "to get xpsp2 with all the updates up until now and ie7 and wmp11 with all update sup until now, you just stick these files into nLite in this order" then that'd be all I need. Since that's what I'm trying to do e_e

So you're saying start with XPSP2 source cd, run nLite only once hoping I get no problems (and don't need to run it again from certain points that were ok that far) and shove in this lot in this order?

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\RVMUpdatePack2.1.11.7z

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\RUPUpdates-2.1.11.13-Addon.7z

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\MMC3 WindowsXP.exe

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\DirectX_9.0c_November_2007_AddOn_0.3.2_-_CNC.7z

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\IE7-WindowsXP-KB939653-x86-ENU.exe (oh this is ie7, I thought it was ie7 patch, so I used it after that ie7 addon)

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WindowsXP-KB933729-x86-ENU.exe

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WindowsXP-KB941202-x86-ENU.exe

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WindowsXP-kb943460.exe

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WindowsXP-kb890830.exe

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\WMP11 Slipstreamer\wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\wmp11\windowsmedia11-kb929399-v2-x86-intl.exe

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\wmp11\WindowsMedia11-KB936782-x86-ENU.exe

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\wmp11\WindowsMedia11-KB939683-x86-ENU.exe

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\NR_UPHC_Addon.cab

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\Ricks_7-Zip4.56b_AddOn.rar

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\Ricks_CCleaner2.03.532_AddOn.rar

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\Ricks_ToolTipFixer1.0.1_AddOn.rar

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\Ricks_GenuineAdvantage_AddOn_71107.7z

And that lot should all work first time? x_x I'll give it a go! Though I still don't know why I get the WGA update listed online after install when I'm using that WGA addon last so I shouldn't get any WGA updates listed? :/

Ok so I found the IE7 (patch) I was integrating after the IE7 addon was infact IE7, so I didn't use the IE7 addon just the normal IE7 installer kb939653.

I also found the malicious software removal tool you can't integrate as the downloaded kb .exe is a tool to run not integrate.

So my list looked like this in nLite

E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\RVMUpdatePack2.1.11.7z
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\RUPUpdates-2.1.11.13-Addon.7z
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\MMC3 WindowsXP.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\DirectX_9.0c_November_2007_AddOn_0.3.2_-_CNC.7z
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\IE7-WindowsXP-KB939653-x86-ENU.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WindowsXP-KB941202-x86-ENU.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WindowsXP-KB933729-x86-ENU.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WindowsXP-KB943460-x86-ENU.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WMP11\WindowsMedia11-KB939683-x86-ENU.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WMP11\windowsmedia11-kb929399-v2-x86-intl.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WMP11\WindowsMedia11-KB936782-x86-ENU.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\Ricks_ToolTipFixer1.0.1_AddOn.rar
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\NR_UPHC_Addon.cab
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\Ricks_7-Zip4.56b_AddOn.rar
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\Ricks_CCleaner2.03.532_AddOn.rar
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\Ricks_GenuineAdvantage_AddOn_71107.7z

HOWEVER ...

When I ran this, I got the following results (note the change in order from that specified in nLite above) :

update 2.1.11 6m

update 2.1.11.13 2m

dx9 1m

addons < 1m

wmp11 ? error : integration error - DirID: "243" is defined more than once in "Txtsetup.Sif"

mmc3 < 1m

ie7 1m

hotfixes 2m

wmp11 hotfixes 1m (... but wmp11 failed to integrate? The kb9365782 one seemed to integrate anyway)

tweaking < 1m

compressing cabinets 10m

Obviously this build is no use, wince wmp11 failed to integrate, and yes it did use the latest boogy integrator which I put in the nLite1.4 final dir as you instructed, and it was the boogy integrator which gave that error :( It was pretty fast as the integrator had only appeared for a few seconds.

Now what? :/ Or did I misinterpret your instructions and do something wrong? >_<

Edit - I'm attaching the txtsetup.sif, as you will see the error is correct, 243 is defined twice :(

Maybe is something wrong with your original cd. You should check it to see does it's txtsetup.sif has this double entry. And upload your preset also here.

So ... what's the difference with addons and hotfixes?

Hotifixes are directly integrated into source, addons don't. Addons are installed silently during T-13 of XP installation.

Not related to this problem, but Ricks_ToolTipFixer1.0.1_AddOn.rar won't work without NET Framework 2.0 and I don't see it on your list for integration.

Cheers ;)

T13 of xp installation sadly means nothing to me, but I guess it would be rather late in the day/last minute.

I've never got that double entry error before so it's not my source cd :/ This is the first time I've got it, and the onyl difference is I'm doing it all in one go as you suggested, and letting nLite use the WMP integrator instead of me doing it first which works fine.

When you say upload my preset what is it you're after - the nLite ini files? I haven't hung in the circles of support for nLite that long <<'

I thought you couldn't integrate the .net stuff oyu had to run it as a runonce after install? Which I chose not to do so I don't have to wait around for the (long) .net3 install unless I run it myself or I can just let autoupdates do it once I'm gone. But I've never used addons on the cd either so forgot to check if they needed .net. Is there a .net 1&2 addon/hotfix I can integrate without 3 which takes ages to install after xp installs? o.o Or correct me if I'm all wrong ^_^

You can find .NET Framework 1+2 here, You will have to register there.

T13 of xp installation sadly means nothing to me, but I guess it would be rather late in the day/last minute.

When I say T-13 I mean on installation of XP. When Installing Windows XP you have green progress bar and minutes above which show you estimate time of finishing installation. When installation reach 13 minute all addons are being installed silently.

When you say upload my preset what is it you're after - the nLite ini files? I haven't hung in the circles of support for nLite that long <<'

Yes, I mean on ini file. Upload your LastSeason.ini.

I think I know why are you getting this error. It's so funny, we talked about it all the time. .NET Framework is problem. Ricks_ToolTipFixer1.0.1_AddOn.rar cause the error, becuase it needs .NET Framework. Try again everything on your way, but without this addon and I think you will not get this error.

Cheers ;)

For real? D: ****. Or, try it the same again but include that .net1/2 addon? I'll try that. Yet another forumto sign upto to get that file and try and sort this problem then xD

Can't anyone put it up somewhere else? I signed up but have ot wait for approval -_-

Ok so where would I insert the following files which I think shuld fix my problem? o.o

RogueSpearAddonsDotNET11SP1.zip

RogueSpearAddonsDotNET20SP1.zip

ScriptPackAddonsdotNET35-Lite.zip

Do I add the first too into nLite as hotfixes & addons? And then manually extract 3.5 to a folder on the cd and make a RonOnceEx commandline to point to it in the nLite unattended part, or is there some was to haev this done automatically?

I really hope the .net 3 doesn't take ages to install after that first reboot - it's the long install time that stopped me bothering including it before :/

Posted (edited)

Yes, you need to do it like you described. Only I'm not sure for order of NET 1 and NET 2 so I recommend you to download Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1, 2.0 SP1 and Visual J# Runtimes 1.1, 2.0 SE from RoqueSpear's Forum (this pack combine v1 and v2 of NET Framework to one package). And I tried this ScriptPackAddonsdotNET35-Lite.zip and I can say that is pretty fast.

Cheers ;)

Ok I tried what you said, I started with XPSP2 + WMP slipstreamed with no updates, then applied the following wiht nLite

[Hotfixes]
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\RVMUpdatePack2.1.11.7z
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\RUPUpdates-2.1.11.13-Addon.7z
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\MMC3 WindowsXP.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\DirectX_9.0c_November_2007_AddOn_0.3.2_-_CNC.7z
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\IE7-WindowsXP-KB939653-x86-ENU.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WindowsXP-KB933729-x86-ENU.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WindowsXP-KB941202-x86-ENU.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WindowsXP-KB943460-x86-ENU.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WMP11\WindowsMedia11-KB939683-x86-ENU.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WMP11\windowsmedia11-kb929399-v2-x86-intl.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Hotfixes\WMP11\WindowsMedia11-KB936782-x86-ENU.exe
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\RogueSpearAddonsDotNET11SP1.zip
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\RogueSpearAddonsDotNET20SP1.zip
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\ScriptPackAddonsdotNET35-Lite.zip
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\NR_UPHC_Addon.cab
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\Ricks_7-Zip4.56b_AddOn.rar
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\Ricks_CCleaner2.03.532_AddOn.rar
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\Ricks_ToolTipFixer1.0.1_AddOn.rar
E:\XPSP2Lite\Updates\Addons\Ricks_GenuineAdvantage_AddOn_71107.7z

and then my tweaks (see attachment)

and then I copied 010_dotNET35-Lite.exe into the cd in a subfolder called OEM, and put the following into nLite as a RunOnceEx command

"\OEM\010_dotNET35-Lite.exe"

I tried to reinstall using this build but now after copying files and rebooting the setup is on the lightblue screen saying windows is preparing to start or whatever it is, and then it reboots and tries again saying setupis restarting, but then it reboots again, and so on. Gah! What's wrong now :( Obviously I've messed that .net/addons stuff >< I put that ScriptPackAddonsdotNET35-Lite.zip into nLite as an addon since the inf file insde made it look like it would copy the file to the cd int he rightplace and perhaps make the RunOnce stuff automatically. But having checked the CD after the integrations before the tweaks and found it wasn't on the cd, I did it manually like I said just above :/

Edit - helps to attach my attachments ...

Any ideas? This is once again (effectively) a worse outcome than before, since now it can't even install windows :( I really want to finish this build before I end up making an sp3 one xD
