tjackson Posted January 29, 2002 Posted January 29, 2002 I have been trying to network two computers to use ICS. The host is WinXp and the client is Win2000. I can share folders but ICS won't work. Both TCP/IP setting are set to obtail an IP address automatically. IPCONFIG on the host says its assigned 192.168.0.5 and the client is 192.168.0.2. When I try to enable ICS on the host, I get the error 799 "Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) cannot be enabled due to an IP address conflict on the network. ICS requires the host be configured to use 192.168.0.1. Please ensure that no other client on the network is configured to use 192.168.0.1". However, I don't have any other computers on this network. When I ping the client from either the host or the client, I get a reply with the name of that computer. And likewise when I ping the host from either computer. I also tried pinging 192.168.0.1 and I get a reply but no computer name. Is it possible that 192.168.0.1 is assigned on my network to a "dummy" computer which may be causing my problem. Any idea how to rectify this since ICS tries to reassign 192.168.0.1 to the host, which now has a conflict?
BAH Posted January 29, 2002 Posted January 29, 2002 Welome to MSFN tjackson.....How are you connecting the two machines together....?via a hub or a x-over cable...?
tjackson Posted January 29, 2002 Author Posted January 29, 2002 I have a NetGear Web safe router aacting as my hub. I get to the internet on my host via dial-up modem.
BAH Posted January 29, 2002 Posted January 29, 2002 So why are you using ICS the router should do all the work for you...Just set your machine to use DHCP there is no need to use ICS.you will probaly find the router uses 192.168.0.1 as its gateway ip thats why ICS is not happy.
Big Booger Posted January 29, 2002 Posted January 29, 2002 http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/read the warnings. It will clarify everything. Another thing you might want to try is deleting all the protocols on both machines and start a fresh connection. It maybe that you have remenets of a previous connection installed or conflicting. Either way, try it. I set up a wireless connection and I could not for the life of me get it connected. What I did was deleted the Protocols on both machines, and did a fresh install. Worked like a woodpecker on a hotdog.Big Boogerfurther,http://isp.vail.net/winXP_dhcp.html try that site for setting up Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.I believe that would be your best bet as BAH stated previously!
tjackson Posted January 30, 2002 Author Posted January 30, 2002 Thanks BAH and Booger. I finally got it to work by disabling DHCP in the router config and enabling ICS on the host machine. Works like a charm. The router was using 192.168.0.1 for itself, or the DSL port, but it wasn't being used. Since it was a dial-up, I guess DHCP wasn't working (or maybe I still don't know what I am doing.) Anyway, ICS reconfiges the host computer with 192.168.0.1 so I was getting the conflict even though the other computer was being assigned something different. The host computer is now assigned 192.168.0.1 and the client is 192.168.0.3. I had the router start at 192.168.0.2. Thanks again for your help.
