it does not work. Could my DNS server be setup wrong?

I have entries under the CACHE in the DNS Configuration screen. But those entries are for web pages only.

so if you resolve a name on your win2k3 server and type ipconfig /displaydns you see the pcs listed that you have resolved? and yet your XP box cannot resolve these names even with the win2k3 server as its dns server?

is this correct?

no I do not.

this is what I did on the W2k3 box:

ipconfig /flushdns

then I accessed '\\acer-travelmate' and click on some of his folders and also pinged it by its dns name which gave me the IP '88.200.110.xxx'

then I did

ipconfig /displaydns

and this is the output:

its not caching like it should, i wonder why? Does anyone know why?

maybe its something to do with the security of 2003? if the XP box were in its place i wonder if it would behave the same?

I added a laptop, JONSON, to my LAN and pinged it from WinXP machine and also accessed its shared drives. And then launched

'ipconfig displaydns'

and there was no mention of such computer.

But when I pinged and accessed the same computer on W2k3 server 'ipconfig displaydns' just said:

jonson

----------------------------------------

Name does not exist.

what else can I do?

I'm not too sure, but can't you just make a static ip address for your xp machine, giving the dns address of your server running dns, then add host records in dns for all the machines on your network.

Sorry my answer is so brief, I'm in a hurry.

I could try. But how do I do that?

hey come to think of it that might just work, if everyone has a static address, using the routes i gave you and adding DNS A records manually through dnsmgmt.msc i think you could get it to work :)

Well, I'm assuming dns is already installed on server. If not, go to server roles and install dns. Like eyeball said, assign static ip's to all machines on the network. I'm thinking static routes won't be necessary if ip's are static. The only comp really using the server's dns will be your xp machine.

The xp machine will have to have the dns address entered in as your servers ip.

In dns, you can add host(computer ip addresses) A records on by one in the dns console.

Then, the dns on your server tells your xp machine what private addresses the other machines have.If the other machines have public addresses, static routes might be required(although I'm not too sure).

Give it a try.
