bertybassett Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 (edited) I'm going for a new job on Monday and the job agency I've applied through have given me a list of likely questions to be asked at the interview.I'm stuck with one question "Why would installing Exchange on a NT4 members server fail?" Does anyone know the answer to this? I'll owe you a beer if I get the job.thanks in advance tom Edited October 24, 2007 by bertybassett
nmX.Memnoch Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I'm not sure what the exact answer is but my response would be:"Why are you still worried about running Exchange on NT4? Or for that matter, running NT4 at all."However, the question should be expanded to include if the NT4 member server is in a 2000/2003 Active Directory. If I'm not mistaken, that makes all the difference in the world with regards to the answer.
bertybassett Posted October 25, 2007 Author Posted October 25, 2007 correct me if I wrong but doesn't a members server mean its connected to AD?
nmX.Memnoch Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 (edited) Not necessarily. I've heard/used the term "member server" used to denote non-domain controllers for quite some time (long before AD). Edited October 25, 2007 by nmX.Memnoch
bertybassett Posted October 26, 2007 Author Posted October 26, 2007 I've been onto the agency and the question should read "why would installing exchange 2000 on a members server in an NT4 domain fail?"anyone know the answer.
bertybassett Posted October 26, 2007 Author Posted October 26, 2007 is the answer as simple as there is no AD in NT4 and it needs this?
cluberti Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 Yes - Exchange 2000 needs to be installed on a Windows 200x server in an Active Directory domain. You can run Exchange 200x in a mixed-mode AD forest with a directory connector to Windows NT 4.0 domains, but this is definitely sub-optimal and should be avoided when possible.
