Hi,

After a test install of my unattended build in VirtualPC, to check for updates I have to:

1. Right click the top bar and select "Run ActiveX Control"

2. Click "Run"

3. Click "Install"

4. Click "Express" to check for critical updates.

This isn't that big a deal, but can it be improved? Is there is a reg tweak or something to enable ActiveX control by default? And just what is it I am installing in step 3, and why can't I integrate or install it in RunOnceEx?

I do, but surely you don't expect me to do a fresh install every time a new update comes out???

Thanks for that. It actually says on your second link that if you've integrated one of RyanVM's packs already (which I have done) to NOT use the WU or MU addons.

I will try later today and see what happens...

You can enable ActiveX using registry keys. I haven't tested it out, but I think should work:

Is there any reason you are updating via the web page vice using automatic updates? Personally I have a script to enable automatic updates and prompt the WSUS to update the machine.

Yep, I don't want M$ having control over what is installed on my machine, I like to install it if I want to! I also find it a good way to see when I needed to update my unattended CD.

I understand that, I like to see what is being installed as well. Thats why I set automatic updates to "notify but don't download or install". I can see whats missing and choose what to download and install. I just really don't like using the web interface, but thats just my opinion.

Oh, and that reg hack didn't work by the way - I'm still asked to add the activex control...

You may find a solution by your self, go to this web site: http://www.epsilonsquared.com/

There are two softwares to download, they track any changes to the registry or system files then give you a setup file (or reg file) which will redo all changes made.

Easy to use, just make a snapshot before you first visit the update page, then an other one after in order to compare any changes made to registry (or/and system files) then export the registry modifications as a reg file. Add it to your XP source CD to be ran during setup.

Yes! That was exactly what I needed! InstallWatchPro created the reg file for me and voila! Perfect. I've tried doing a similar thing with RegSnap before, but that never created the reg file for me so I was a bit lost.
