Should I stay with WinXP SP2 home, or are there better alternatives?2.) Is there anything one should do before installing the operating system?3.) What are the most important things to do after install?4.) What other questions am I forgetting to ask? Arie Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Your question can't be answered that easily. The most important question is, what do you use your system for? Also, do you use software which is Microsoft Windows specific, or would you consider switching to a different, free operating system such as Linux?By simply looking at the specifications of your system which you supplied, I would simply suggest Microsoft Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2. Simply boot from the disc and create two partitions; one of 30GB and one of 50GB. You can use the first for your operating system and the second one for your personal data and files. Format the 30GB partition and install the operating system on it. After the installation update your system and configure it properly. Make sure to install a proper anti-virus and anti-spyware solution. This should get you started.
Tripredacus Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 If you are on a network that has more than 5 computers, you should get Windows XP Pro.
srikat Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Windows to desktop Linux in three easy stepsYou like the idea of a free, lightweight OS. But isn’t installing and using Linux on a desktop painful? Not if you use this guidehttp://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/index.php/id;1796074138
