I have a LinkSys WRT54G wireless-g broadband router and i was wondering if i have to have it plugged into the computer to use it.

I think you have to be wired to set it up, but once you do that you should be able to be wireless.

with that router it only needs to be plugged into the computer to configure it, after its configured you can stay connected with a cable or go wireless, its up to you
