Keeping this thread going and updated with information would be fantastic. Sometimes it's hard to track down what every component does, or what effects can happen when it's removed.

Like nuhi said, this isn't a bug. If you remove enough icons from the Start Menu that it is no longer at least the minimum length of the Windows logo image, then it won't be displayed. This has been happening since 98se I know, on every version. If you care about the logo, just gotta add more icons in.
