  1. I need an constant and fast search access within an archive of 250 GB of files
  2. Hello everyone, Here a have a quest that can't find the perfect solution for a half year now. I have one machine at office and one at home, both Windows XP SP3, ADSL connection with static IP. On the office machine a have an archive of about 250 GB of files. When i am at home sometimes i need to connect to my office machine, search through those files, maybe preview some, and then download some needed files to my home machine, using a download queue feature is possible. The task doesn't seem so complicated, yet, i did not find a perfect simple solution so far. Solutions that i tried already, and don't need suggestion on: Radmin UltraVNC TeamViewer p300 DC++ and many variations of it. Note: am not allowed, and don't want to install any kind or sort of server application on office machine. So considering all these factors, does anyone have even an idea what solution would be fine for me? Thank you.
  3. Thank you. What i want its something like these online services: http://www.uptrends.com/aspx/free-website-server-network-monitoring-tool.aspx http://www.site24x7.com/check-website-availability.html Only that i want a bit more sophisticated application that could be installed on my machine, instead of an online service subscription.
  4. Hello everyone, I am on Windows XP, and looking for an application that could be used to check my website availability from cities / countries around the world. Many times it happens that for some reason my website is unavailable from some cities of India, or Russia, or for example isn't available via some internet providers in my own country. So i thought there could be some sort of professional program like that, that could be flexible used to verify website availability from different cities / countries / internet services providers. Any good suggestions around? Big thank you in advance. Regards,
  5. Thank you for reply 5eraph, I'll try experimenting with the QoS option.
  6. Hello everyone, I am on Windows XP SP2 and I have a regular ADSL connection with 10 Mbit download and 1 Mbit upload. I have noticed a strange thing, whenever i am uploading something using full 1 Mbit speed, it becomes impossible to continue using internet and browse web pages, sites are loading very slow. Seems like the bandwidth used for uploading somehow affects the download bandwidth, bit i don't get how is one connected to the other? May be there is some wrong setting in my modem? Has anyone encountered an issue like that? Is there a solution? Thank you.
  7. Manual steps to run Chkdsk 1. Chkdsk requires exclusive access to a volume when it runs. Therefore, if one or more of the files are open on the disk that you want to check, Chkdsk displays a prompt asking if you want schedule the disk check for the next time that you restart your computer. 2. Chkdsk might take a long time to run, depending on the number of files and folders, the size of the volume, disk performance, and available system resources, such as processor and memory. 3. Chkdsk might not accurately report information in read-only mode. Manual steps to run Chkdsk at the command prompt 1. Click Start, and then Run. 2. In Open, type cmd, and then press ENTER. 3. Use one of the following procedures: To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, at the command prompt, type chkdsk, and then press ENTER. To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/f, and then press ENTER. Note : If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check. • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/r, and then press ENTER. Note : If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check. if you don't want to schedule the disk then Type N. Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer 1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check. 2. Click Properties, and then click Tools. 3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed, 4. Use one of the following procedures: • To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start. • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start. • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start. Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message: The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer? Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check. The following table lists the exit codes that Chkdsk reports after it has finished: Exit code Description 0 No errors were found. 1 Errors were found and fixed. 2 Disk cleanup, such as garbage collection, was performed, or cleanup was not performed because /f was not specified. 3 Could not check the disk, errors could not be fixed, or errors were not fixed because /f was not specified. Great dummies guide, thanks Actually i know all this. My problems is that during reboot check disk can't run because something is automatically canceling it.
  8. Hello, I am on Windows XP SP2. Windows has scheduled a chkdsk at system boot, but something is canceling it automatically. Every time I restart Windows, it tries to run a chkdsk but never succeed because it is being automatically cancelled. Windows says it better to run it and no matter how many times I try to schedule it, it is being cancelled. Is there a way to find what’s canceling it and how to make sure it runs? Where is the file that contains chkdsk command anyway? Thanks.

  13. Hello everybody, For certain performance reasons I HAVE to move back to from IE7 to IE. I am actually mostly using Firefox, but yet, whenever I use IE6 I want it to be at least as 50% safe as IE7. Especially I want to find a way to block drive-by installs when navigating infected websites. Is there a way to configure IE6 in such way that nothing gets installed from browser, or no script will automatically run and install till I give IE6 permission to do that? Is it possible at all to make IE6 safe? Any info or links for good articles are deeply appreciated. Regards.

  15. Hello everyone, I would need some help in solving an irregular question. I have a NGO organization that use 5 computers and I am looking to buy 5 licenses for Windows XP SP2 and 5 licenses for Microsoft Office 2000. I would like to mention that I got no interest in other versions of Windows and Office, and no interest in Open Source software or free alternatives. I’ve been digging around www.microsoft.com but did not find a clear answer where could I buy these packages. I am disparate to urgently buy these products wherever they are sold, but it must be real licensed software. Could anyone help me with links or addresses to some trusted shops/dealers with good prices or anything? Thank you very much in advance. Best regards.
  16. Hello, I am on Windows XP SP2 Pro, and I have a question regrading some security and access restricting software. I need a utility that will provide me the possibility to manage and restrict access for various Windows users to certain installed programs and Windows OS security features/options. But i don't want to have that utility running in the system tray or background all the time, eating system resources. I just want to be able to use it for restricting purposes when I need, and then close it and forget about it, so that security changes or registry tweaks will remain active even if this program is exited. Its probably something that deal with Windows built in Group Policy - User Configuration or Local Security Settings applets. Does anyone know a program like that? Thanks a lot in advance. Regards.
  17. Thanks for helping hand everyone. After all i managed to solve the issue using Dial-a-fix tool. Regards.

  23. Hello, I have problems with CD/DVD ROM. Normally it was able to read any CD/DVD before when I had Windows XP Pro SP2 installed. Now after I reinstalled the OS and decided to go with Windows XP Media Center Edition, my optical drive can’t read any of multi-session CD or DVD, thus crashing Windows to “Blue Screen of Death” every time I place in a multi-session CD or DVD. Besides, even if it sometimes accepts a multi-session CD or DVD, still it can display only the last session burned, so I have to access other previous sessions via tools like IsoBuster. Other than that it can read fine any burned CD or DVD. I would like some help from any of you with the drivers or anything. System specifications are: Laptop: Acer TravelMate 290 Optical Drive: QSI CDRW/DVD SBW-242, DVD:8x, CD:24x/10x/24x OS: Windows XP Pro SP2 Media Center Edition Thanks a lot in advance!
