  1. Exactly, I am putting an OEM key back on the machine it came off of, with it's COA still plastered on the side. I muddied the waters on that posting with the "legal issues" thing (sorry)...my real concern was the future upgrades issue. The source cd I am using is NOT an OEM, but I am using the machines setupp.ini. Thanks. Straytoasters
  2. I have a (hurting) WinXP Home machine. Dell, no OS disk or restore partition. The plan is to re-install the OS. The plan: use a different XP Home OS disk, use the hurting machines XP Key (OEM) and setupp.ini file, and hfslip all that to current. Make bootable ISO, burn to CD, Install. That should work...right? Using the machines key, keeps the install legal and using the machines setupp.ini "should" allow for no future update problems...right? If I am missing a step somewhere let me know. Thanks. 3. Is there anyway to get the XP start menu in Vista? Be in a hack, theme, visual style, 3rd party, reg mod, or whatever. What I really want is a Start Button (not a frelling orb) and a start menu that expands (cascades), getting the XP colors (luna blue or royal) would be nice but a secondary consideration. I have been playing around with WindowBlinds, but none seem to be able to do the expanding menu thing, and some other theme/visual style things I have tried (mostly from http://www.deviantart.com) I havent gotten to work (and none of the pics show expanding menus anyway...so I am not sure there is actually a solution there anyway). I have also seen "vista start menu" but that basically just reverts to the classic menu but with Vista colors, but then goes ahead and add other elements...not what I am looking for. I actually want 1) A start button, 2) Two collumn start menu and 3) Expanding menus. I have seen billions (I'm exaggerating, but only a little) of hacks, themes, etc...that will make your "XP just like Vista", but nothing that will replicate the XP look, feel and action in Vista. I realize the way XP and Vista handles this type of thing is different, but surely I am not the only one who feels this way (and lets not even get started on that horrible "ribbon" thing in Office 07). Any insight is greatly appriciated. Thank you. Straytoasters
  4. I did, got no love with that. Here is what I did find. See I have a shared drive where I keep a bunch of tools (regshot being one of them), I usually run it from the network drive...that failed, I moved it to the local drive...that failed. I downloaded a new copy and run it (not installed, but ran from the unzipped file), and it worked fine. I am guessing (way purely guessing) that regshot doesent like junction points. Since (my old) regshot was preset to "doc and settings" and not appdata as Vista uses it just refused to use the junction point redirector. However starting regshot "from start" in Vista it seems to like the junction point re-direction. Anyhow it seems to work with all that in mind. Straytoasters
  5. Ok, I have seen articles where other people are having the same problem. RegShot will open but then stall/lock up when you do a shot-shot/save. Some people on the forums here seem to be having success with it, but its not working for me. What am I missing? Straytoasters
  6. Is there anyway to install an application in compatibility mode from CMD. Something like /runin:xp or /runin:2k instead of having to change the appliations propertys before installing it? Thanks. Strytsters
  7. OK, here's what I got after my last experiment. See I had been adding in the BTS drivers but not using the BTS intergrator. The BTS intergrator does work, but I was just trying to avoid a step and just toss the uncompressed BTS drivers in HFEXPERT\DRIVERCAB and hoping for the best. Childish...yes, a shot in the dark...yes, but I was trying it anyway. Anyhow the problem seems to have been that I was actually placing the uncompressed BTS drivers in a HFEXPERT\CODECS folder (yeah, thats what my OHHH was about a while ago). I dont know why that would cause the XP vs Classic thing I was seeing, I figured they would more or less just be ignored, but putting the BTS drivers in \DRIVERCAB seems to have fixed it. The BTS drivers did not install, but I can run the BTS intergrator on the sourcess folder once the HFslip build is done (did it before and it worked fine). I need to do a little bit more expermention before I declare victory, but I seem to have a solution. By the way, I slipstream IE7 in, hope that answers the question.
  8. Reinstalling again to check, not sure what you mean by default handling. IE7=yes (installed, WMP11 also), if by default handling you mean does IE7 look all blocky and square, yes, I believe so, but reinstalling again to check for sure. OHHH, I just realized something. I need to make another ISO (different build) to check something. Toss me some suggestions if you have any, and I will report back after my new expirement.
  9. OK, I made a DVD from the .iso and installed in both a VM and RM. The VM boots as regular XP interface (green start menu/two column), the RM boots as XP classic (grey start menu/one column I think (it may have been two column)). I can go into themes set the theme to regular XP and it will stay after reboot, but I just dont know why I am getting different start interfaces from the same DVD. It does say "modified" when I go into themes and change it. Its just weird. The VM is Virtual Box 1.3.8 and the RM is a Dell Optiplex GX260 (fat style) and is close to three years old. Straytoasters
  10. Using HFslip 1.4.1, using same .iso for VM and real machine (using DVD not actual .iso on real machine...but duh). I removed a couple of folders like the win9x upgrade folders and such. When I get a chance i will rebuild with the complete root from a WinXP CD, but in the mean time does anyone know why I would get standard XP interface on a VM (Virtual Box) but classic interface on a real machine? I have .net 3 in the hfguirun once and it failes on both installs. I will figure out the why of the .net 3 later, I am just mentioning that in case it is in any way relevent. So, any thoughts, anyone else experienced this? Straytoasters
  11. That is what I tried before posting to begin with. I changed quicktime to equicktime thinking that quicktime would then install before itunes (due to alpha), but itunes still installed first. I will give it another try. Thank you. Straytoasters
  12. HFslip puts a hfslip.cms in the svcpack folder of the soursess folder that seems to tell the install what to do at T-13, how does HFslip decide this order and can I just edit the hfslip.cmd and everything will be okay. Example...Firefox install then Symantec...I want Symantec to install first...can I just change their order in the hfslip.cmd? Straytoasters
  13. I want to change the content in a middle table/cell from links on the same page in another table cell. Essentially I am wanting to write text in the document that is hidden till called upon, and when called upon it is put in the table/cell specified in the link. The “wiki on a stick” project does something very similar. A (not real) code example of what I am looking for is something like this: <table with two columns> <collumn1 ID=”navbar”> Link1 <content1 target=”main”> Link2 <content2 target=”main”> Link3 <content3 target=”main”> </column1> <column2 ID=”main”> Default text (probably link 1) </column2> </table> <hidden data> <content1> Lots of text </content1> <content2> Lots of more text </content2> <content3> Still more text </content3> </hidden data> I realize this will probably at least involve JavaScript (I can fathom a pure html way of accomplishing this), and yes, I am trying to avoid an iframe. I have read something about writing to layers, but it wasn’t terribly clear. Any thoughts/suggestions? Straytoasters
  14. I wasent clear, I apolizige. I am ok with Quicktime installing, my question is how to I make a silent installer get the main itunes installer to install (silently). The silent installers I have made so far from itunes installs JUST itunes. Quicktime and the Apple Updates thing doesent. Again it looks like my options are a AutoIT script or make three seperate silent installers for the three .msi's inside the Itunes.exe. In any case, thank you. I will try posting elsewhere. Straytoasters
  15. Short of an autoIT script is there a good way to do a silent install of Itunes? I mean the actual installer isnt reconized as an "known" installer by any method I have used (USSF, Universal Extractor) so no silent switch. ...inside the itunes.exe is a three .msi's (itunes, quicktime and applesoftwareupdate) and a itunes setup admin.exe (which is also not reconized as any known installer). You can make a switchless silent installer (via either the method listed on one of the MSFN posts or via iexpress and give it .msi switches, but that only seems to install itunes, not quicktime (which is needed...barring alternative codecs), or the apple software update software. So is there a good way to install itunes with full functionality without making quicktime a seperate install or not? Straytoasters
  16. Is there any way to get Excel 2003 to automatically drop to the next cell after a specified number of characters in a cell? Most of the posts I read on this people say things like "how is Excel suppose to know when you are done, it cant read your mind". Yeah, well, duh! But you can limit the characters in a cell, so is there no way to attach an action when that character limit is reached? Basically I am creating a up/down list and doing countif's at the bottom for the totals...I'm just lazy and am trying to not have to manually do the carriage returns. Anyone have any ideas? 17. Ok, I hate to sound like a whiner, but since the hotfixes/updates slipstreamed dont show up in add/remove, but HFslip does add an entry to there, would it be possible for HFslip to add the HFslip log to the C:\root and put some text in the add/remove entry like "For a list of the updates slipstreamed in look at C:\hfslip.log". Just wondering, thanks. Straytoasters
  18. Using WINNT.sif to set things up but is seems to only be partially processing it. Upon first boot I still get prompted for a user setup (along with the network setup, and do you want to register screens), but I am not getting asked for the license key...so its at least processing that. Here is the WINNT.sif I am using (some data change---duh). ;SetupMgrTag [Data] AutoPartition=1 MsDosInitiated="0" UnattendedInstall="Yes" [unattended] UnattendMode=FullUnattended OemSkipEula=Yes OemPreinstall=No TargetPath=\WINDOWS [GuiUnattended] AdminPassword="secret" EncryptedAdminPassword=NO AutoLogon=Yes AutoLogonCount=1 OEMSkipRegional=1 TimeZone=35 OemSkipWelcome=1 [userData] ProductID=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx FullName="Comp User" OrgName="Home" ComputerName=* [identification] JoinWorkgroup=WORKGROUP [Networking] InstallDefaultComponents=Yes I could have swore this worked at least once. 19. I dont see a like on the client pages where you can click to get the admin updates for Office 2003. And just to be clear the updates that have "fullfile" in the name ARE NOT the admin updates (or are they)? I have slipstreamed the "fullfile" updates and later went to office updates and been shown the updates I needed but they were grayed out and the message "You need the administrative version of this update due to previously applied administrative updates", so I guess a further question is...after you have installed one administrative update, can you never again install from Office updates? Any insight appriciated, even if it is just pointing me to a forum thread I missed. Straytoasters
  20. That understandable (and the SP2 thing (not showing up if slipstreamed), thats what I realized today before getting back to the boards). I have wanted to try hfslip for a while and now that I have finally gotten around to it I love it, I will proubably continue to use it. Great product, thank you to all contributers. Straytoasters
  21. Yeah, thats what I was afraid of, this is expected behavior. But still Nirsoft WUL was able to find 64 of the 77 I slipstreamed, I would have though that WUL would be looking in the same place as add/remove, I guess not, still it would be nice if there was some utility to write those value as a last step. Also Belarc see's 63 of them (it was proubably 64). In any not being able to see the updates in add/remove make this a no go for me, bummer, I really like this setup. Straytoasters
  22. I am sure I missed this somewhere else in my few searches, so I apologize ahead of time. Using XP Pro (pre) slipstreamed SP2, but the HFslip-ed updates don’t show up in add/remove control panel. Is this a side effect of the way HFslip works or am I doing something wrong? Nirsoft Windows Updates List does show the updates (with KB number) and going to Windows Update only prompts me for the updates I deliberately did not install. Suggestions? Straytoasters
  23. Or can you hook up a usb hard drive and have it shared too? I am thinking of getting an 8 drive external drive box and I would prefer to just have it hooked up directly to the router rather then having to go through a computer. All the routers (except for one really badly review Netgear) that have usb ports promo it as if the usb ports can ONLY be used with a printer...is that true or just a marketing idea of how most people will use it. Straytoasters
  24. The Topic and description pretty much says it...is there a small .exe or .inf that will allow the storage card in the PPC to show up in explorer (hooked up via usb), when I hook it up now I just get a prompt for installing a serial device. Surely ActiveSync is not a "have to". When I install ActiveSync the device show up and the storage card does to (a couple of folders down). When I get a chance (when I re-discover my password) I am going to post on howardforums too. Cingular 8525 (tytn) 1gig microsd (sandisk) Straytoasters
  25. Essentially my company has went to Office 2007, which does not have the MS document scanning abilitys. You can still install it by going through the Office 2003 installer and chosing not to install any programs, but to install selected optional components, but I am wanting to avoid the full blown installer. Isnt there a cab file somewhere that that would have the .exe installer (or .msi) that would install just this componet? I have seen on MSDN somewhere "oh, you can just download MODI, if you need that for Office 2007" (backward compatibitly), but they never supplied a link to download it. Thoughts??? Straytoasters
