  1. While I appreciate your response, I realized that I didn't mention specifically the fact that I want the User temp directory to be in the same place as the windows temp. The problem that I am running into is that the user profile isn't completely set when the batch file runs. I really don't know when a proper time is to run the registry edit. Any Ideas?
  2. Were you able to figure out the answer then spirefm?
  3. I am curious as to why you want to install from the dvd? It is much slower from the DVD than it is when it installs from the hard drive. I do understand the need for cleanliness, but when you get to the end of your batch file just set up to delete the install folder and run a defrag. I know this seems stupid since I just said that the hard drive is faster than the DVD, but when you think about it, Microsoft says that you should defrag a new machine anyway since the files are fragmented even directly after a fresh install. So you would be doing it anyway. Just a thought... Rhondo
  4. Well, here goes... I attempted to extract the envrionment variables from my existing registry to be used in my reg file for the unattended install. The problem I ran into is that for some reason, when my program installations started, they started crashing since the temp directory that they would use was altered by the edited registry. The reason I am changing this is so that the temp files are all in the same folder and to lessen the amount of movement and wear on the hard drive. It actually speeds up the "windows envrionment" a little, enough to be noticeable at least. If anyone is interested in helping I can post the code later, since I don't have it handy at the moment. I think that perhaps it may be due to permissions or accounts not having been populated yet. I am not sure. Has anyone been successful in this? Thanks in advance... Rhondo
  5. Hey guys, I am trying to figure out why my virtual pc install won't work with the unattended ISO that I create when it works with VMware. I have a licensed version of virtual pc and just the trial of vmware. There are several factors that are frustrating me to no end. I have created a bootable DVD and it works. My winnt.sif file works fine and almost all of my applications install the way they are supposed to. The main problem is that in Virtual PC, when it gets to the "'Setup is Loading Windows..." portion of text mode, it just sits there forever and does nothing. I have it as the foremost application and disabled all other softwares running. I have even attempted msconfig to only load the services that I need minimally to use virtual pc. I have tried it with SP1 installed and without it installed. I have also tried the fixed hard drive and the dynamic hard drive. Nothing seems to get me past that point. What really gets my goat is that for whatever reason, when I use the source and create an iso that is not unattended, it seems to work like a dream in whatever configuration I put it in. I use it at work with no problems whatsoever. The only major difference in what I am doing is the hardware. I have the dual Xeon workstation at work and a simple single proc AMD at home. I know that there shouldn't be an issue here, but obviously there is and I can't seem to find an answer from anywhere. Microsoft hasn't answered my questions and no one else seems to ask the same question I have. I don't want to hear "just use vmware". I want to figure out why this isn't working with virtual pc since that is what I have the license for. If anyone has any advice or needs more information please respond any way you wish. You can email me, pm me or just post that is fine. Thanks in advance for any help that can be afforded me. Rhondo
  6. Can someone either fix the above links, or let us know where the data went? I am looking for the same things. I have most, just can't find the one for Movie Maker. Thanks Rhondo
  7. Hello all, I just signed up last night since I wanted to be able to really participate in the discussions here. I have been looking at this site for about a week now and have found all of your comments to be extremely helpful. I am a Service Coordinator and Helpdesk/Network admin at a small firm here in Seattle, WA. I have been leaning towards getting several certifications and basically just getting started in the industry. I hope that I can be a contributing member of this forum soon as I have learned a few things on my own that might be helpful. Until then, Rhondo
