  1. after looking at a few thing, this may be a bad idea, guess no one's thought of doing this before.. gonna leave the system alone. (Edit: one of the reason is that the application data keeps information about the program it's self which would not match when it's ran from a different drive.)
  2. Unfortunately there is not enough information to answer your question.. We would need to know what router (and thus the capabilities of that router) you are using and the wireless adapter that is in the dell. The adapter you listed seems to be a built in adapter for a laptop that is a/b/g compatible (54mbps max speed) There could also be something going on because all your test results are faster than you listed connection: you say you got a 20MB connection yet: However, all that aside, the probable issues you have is that that wireless adapter is not able to go any faster, or there is something wrong with antenna/adapter it's self.
  3. Ok, I have an idea here and before I re-install my computer, I decided to run this people to see if it's a good idea, let me describe my computer's set up and reason's why it's like this: I have 3 drives: primary master IDE (80 GB, seperated into 3 boot partitions described below) C: drive (Music and stuff): This boot is used for iTunes, office, virus/spyware software and all non-gamming/development tasks D: drive (Games): much like the lable states, it's a boot for games, only games and support software are installed her (logitech g15, java, DAEMON Tools lite, ect...) but only windows and the keyboard software actually loads. E: drive (Development): this boot has any developmental software installed as I see fit, currently apache server, PHP, mySQL and a handful of other things. Secondary master IDE (110GB, no partitioning) F: drive (Development Data): This holds data that is used when I am working on thing in the development boot, it also holds ISO files of various games that I might want to play and don't feel like looking for the CDs, also is the location of the swap files for each boot and is occasionally a installation test drive SATA channel1 (300 GB, no partitioning) G: drive (Games and Documents): this drive holds the actual installs for some of the larger games I play as well as the "My Documents" folder for each of the drives. the "My Documents" folder is changed after the installation of each boot and I got 2 CD ROM drives as the secondaries on each of the IDE channels (H, I) I know that there is a way to change the default location of the "Documents and Settings" directory during the initial installation of windows, I also know that this is where some programs store important information under the hidden "Application data" of the user's directory. (Firefox stores the installed extensions here and Thunderbird stores the e-mails.) I already got XP so that it will see each drive as it correct letter (was an issue because of the SATA raid controller) I want to know if it is a good (or bad) idea to have all 3 installations (boots) point to the same "Documents and Settings" directory on the G Drive instead of having each their own, that way I'ed only have to set up one FF, Thunderbird, ect... Thanks for any information.
  4. Assuming WOL mean Wakeup on LAN, that's quite possible. esp if your on an "Always on" internet connection because (as I understand it) when your LAN card receives traffic, it waked up the computer. the internet will send you traffic at random intervals, normally blocked by firewall/security software. Something as simple as a random ping would wake it up. I think there is a logger for network traffic which is the closest thing I can think of for the type of logger your are looking for is simply a network traffic logger. (If I'm wrong please correct me )
  5. Tied the program, it is on the comptuer to prevent him from going to the wrong sites. As for the Internet password....that does not work for a DSL connectionthat is always on. (Unless there is a way to password protect the internet connection in general.) Well, I'm gonna keep looking, does anyone happen to know if you can update a system from Win XP Home to Win XP Pro?
  6. The reason I don't want to use this type of program, is that they are too easy to get around, and we do not want to simply filter sites, we want to remove the internet completly (he's supposed to be doing his homework, but he keeps playing on the internet, that why we want to just remove the internet access completly from his account). Thanks for any info. (Edit, I hate small keyboards )
  7. My mom's got Win XP home on her system and would like to restrict Internet access on my little brother's account. (someone got busted) Now I found a way to do this using Win XP pro, but is there a way to do this with home? If not, is there a way to upgrade an install to Win XP pro from XP home wothout re-installing the whole OS?
  8. Well, on ym last disk, I let nlite to the install creation.. I think I'll do it by hange next time ( I followed ryan's guite for the most part, skipping parts I didn't need to do. (ie the application install) I'll try TD's idea, and if that don't work....(dunno) *gets to work*
  9. Here's a riddle for you to ponder: my second to last semi-unattended install disk (kinda a base for other I will make) included a hacked uxtheme.dll well, after the install, windows kept wanting to copy the file from the CD. I think it was a version conflict, but I'm not sure. I used N-lite to create the file if that helps. Is ther a way to keep that problem from comming back while allowing me to use the unsigned themes
  10. Me it seems to be about 1-5 times a year depending on how much I upgrade it or get board and play with the registry Normaly it's because of upgrades, if I so muchas add another case fan, I re-install (heaven forbid I get a new HD or Videocard, my wife thinks I exploded )
