  1. Somewhere along the lines of either using your updates or messing around, the sort by file type column is gone in Explorer... this should be an easy fix, right? edit: I think it went missing when I added the "show file attrib" column for Explorer...
  2. OK, so what's new with 4.1??? I *just* got 4.0 a few days ago Read your page and the beginning of this post... nothing... unless I'm just completely stupid?
  3. Latest QT 7, but any since 6 or so I believe has had qttask... but it's no big deal with mlin's file monitor. I know about setting Java prefs. in browsers, but after I try opening the CP applet I just get a blank grey box... it *used* to work, I don't know what happpend, but I'll try your suggestions! Thanks alot
  4. HOOOLY crap the power pack wouldn't even install It got to 60% after like 10 mins then thrashed the HDD for like another 15 before I said enough is enough Guess I'm gonna need more than 32MB of RAM, eh? Well until then I'll just have to download and install each pack individually Thanks for everything guys, it's good to have fun stuff to do to 98 I'm actually very surprised of what you can do, in terms of all the stuff you can overwrite and it still runs... and looks better afterwards
  5. You know what else doesn't mix? Quicktime's startup crap file qttask.exe It messes alot of stuff up, in my experience, esp. on 98 systems I use Mike Lin's Startup Monitor to keep it "tame" Good little tool and it's super lightweight www.mlin.net check it out As far as Java goes, on my XP box the control panel applet won't even run, even after I reinstalled it, latest vesion, too. And I thought XP was more stable, hah. Haven't had any problems with Flash like you describe, though...
  6. Got it to work with the /nr switch... thanks for the help guys The USB problem was solved after the reinstall; Appeared to be a .dll and another file I overlooked whilst doing the manual update... I figured the install woulda never went over after the experience of trying to reinstall OEM SE on a Gateway box that I unlocked the BIOS on. **** checksums Now it's off to install the power pack and mess with some nux distros mwooo hahahhaaa
  7. I got a used PC for free, a Compaq Deskpro2000... yeah I know, but hey, free computer. It's suprisingly fast for a Pent166 with 98 on it! OK so I try and update 98 to SE and it basically says "sorry, you've got 98 already installed and you need the upgrade version" BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!! Whatever, I have a full OEM install disc, just not a Compaq one, and it's bitching about upgrade version? ARRRRRGH. So me, being an "under the hood" type-person, I go and copy all the SE .cab files to it's appropriate directory, tell 98 in the registry where too look for the cab's and go about my merry way of manually updating things, so to speak. Kernel32, user.exe, explorer, gdi, alot of lower level stuff, I have updated with no problem to the SE versions. I have also installed a security update CD from 02/2004. I've no problems at all thus far, except for the fact I can't get USB to work. It's having a problem with installing the Root Hub. I'm getting "The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver (code 2). I've followed all of the suggestions from over at usbman.com, and installed the VIA 4-in-1's and USB filter driver, and still nothing... It's a VIA 3038 Controller and the main chipset is a VIA VP2, if that helps... I guess I have two real questions, even though most everything works just fine with alot of the SE files, am I just setting myself up for future problems? And will the SE service pack work or will I just have to wipe the drive and put SE on that way?
  8. Well, with the AMD IDE drivers, there is no option to enable DMA in the Drives' properties.. From AMD's driver page: Q: Why has the DMA box disappeared in the hard disk Device Manager under Windows 95/98? A: The DMA box can only be used with the standard Microsoft driver. When a third-party driver is installed (such as the AMD EIDE Driver), the DMA box will no longer appear. However, the driver is programmed to use all devices in their most optimal configuration. Therefore, if DMA is available for that particular device, the driver will use it. Maybe my problem has something to do with the fact that the AMD 750 chipset is one of the WORST ever put out. So who uses M$'s IDE drivers vs. say, AMD's? Should I?
  9. * Did you install Adaptec's ASPI ? * Did you install AMD IRQ Driver ? No, I wasn't aware that 98SE or Nero 6.6 needed that ASPI layer...? and Yes all latest AMD drivers Does 6.6 have problems vs. 6.3? I tried the 6.6.0.18....no go. I *always* burn at the lowest speed with audio, and no more than 12x with anything else... I'll try the new ASPI
  10. I use to have Nero 5.5 with a Lite-On CD-RW burner that worked fine before I formatted and reinstalled 98SE, then my Lite-On DVD-RW drive and finally the service pack. I cannot burn nrg files or even iso files... when I try, I get a "Command Sequence Error / Cannot Start Disc-at-once" error message and the burn fails. After numerous and frankly useless e-mails with both Nero and Lite-On tech support, I assume there might be a problem with my setup and the service pack. So, I hope someone can see this and maybe relate? 11. Why doesn't the hack (Supposed to show detailed processor info. like stepping, etc.) in the registry where you add a space between the "VendorIdentifier" string value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Hardware\Description\System\CentralProcessor\0 work after I installed 98SE Service Pack? Thanks
