  1. Ok, guess I just have to test it. But how do I know that all is ok?
  2. Hi, At work I have used Ghost with sysprep images to be able to fast re-install users PC's. We have been running win2k but now our new Dell laptops is running XP pro. I would like to pre install the software we use and sysprep the XP, but I am not sure if one can do that, as XP has some kind of activation thing. I would like to use the XP CD that came with DELL to be sure there is no problems with licenses. Some in our company are starting to talk about RIS also. I dont really know RIS, but I guess there is the same problem with XP activation? Im sure this can be fixed, but dont know how PS. Im planning to use the Dell XP Ghost image only for the Dell laptops that came with the Dell XP.
  3. Can you describe in detai what happends when you cant login? What IP does the pc have? Can you ping stuff? Do you get errors?
  4. The built in firewall is ok. It does not let incomming trafic in, but it does not stop outgoing trafic. This means that if you get a trojan and it sends data to the net, the XP firewall will not stop that. If you have only 1 pc connected to the net, I think the built in firewall is good enough, but only if you keep antivir and winupdates to date. Also if you dont share your pc in a home network, remove microsoft client and server services from network settings. I only run TCP/IP and have removed all other services, so there is less to hack. If you have more than 1 PC and you are sharing folders or printers, I suggest you get a hardware firewall. If you still want to use a personal software firewall, you should disable XP firewall. Its not a good idea to run 2 firewalls on same pc. ZoneAlarm is a nice product, it allerts when something wants to use the net, incomming or outgoing.
  5. I put the mountains as my desktop background its nice, tho I dont have long horns
  6. My avatar is my pet This is what happends if I leav my dog alone whit my kids
  7. Am I getting old? Looking at newsgeek screen shots, I get the feeling this is not a OS suited for bussines use. When 50% of the screen is filled up with bells and whistles and only 50% of the display is for actually displaying the files in a folder, I have to wonder what is going on. At work we are getting XP workstations (we used win2k so far) and first thing we agreed on was to put the classic view on. Maybe im just old fassioned, but I dont really want all that candy on the screen.
  8. likuidkewl, Might be a temporary thing, but I cant open those links you posted.
  9. Crispy, Thx, the avatar is my little dog called Mona, and she so knows she is cute
  10. To make a form with check boxes you can use IE as a front end. http://www.borncity.com/WSHBazaar/WSHFormIE.htm and to run the installation programs use WshShell.Run http://www.ss64.com/wsh/run.html
  11. Hi all, Found youre site googling the net about windows. Nice looking site, and so much to read. Thx all for sharing your knowledge on the forum
  12. I had a user that got the "Trojan.Qhosts" It changes the DNS server in TCP/IP settings, and makes some changes on the browser, there was also something about google that the trojan changes. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...jan.qhosts.html So check if your DNS setting has changed, and if it has you might want to run the removal tool from the web site. If you can not get to www.symantec.com, try reseting the DNS to DHCP in tcp ip settings. (if dhcp is the correct setting for you. If you dont konw, write the current DNS address down before changing) Or maybe temporary add symantec to your host file Addresses: 213.244.181.70, 213.244.181.22, 213.244.181.68, 213.244.181.54 213.244.181.14, 213.244.181.63 Aliases: www.symantec.com, www.symantec.d4p.net
  13. Hi, I am interested to deploy software as packages on the users computers, in stead of installing the same programs over and over on different pc's. I found a nice freeware product called "Install Rite" (http://www.epsilonsquared.com/) Problems ====== Looking on the changes the before and after snapshots has detected, I get some doubth about deploying software like this. I wonder what happends if the original install program does detections of the target pc, and installs dynamically stuff, that is needed for the program to run. Now if the pc that is used to build packages allready has the component, it will not install it to the package, and strange problems might accure on the users pc's. Or if there is special dynamic registry keys, like shared DLL counters, now the package either over writes the counter or does not update it? Maybe there can be other problems, that I dont know about, or maybe the above really arent that big problems? Info === There are alot of registry changes detected that has nothing to do with the installation. Do anyone know any web page where or other info on what can safely be ignored in snapshots. There seems to be registry keys containing keywords like "seed", "noroam", "mru" that I think can be igonored, but I might be wrong. So if anyone know anything about this, I would be very interested to hear your oppinions about software packaging.
  14. Hi, Try Install Rite (http://www.epsilonsquared.com/) Its a free before/after install snapshot program, that also makes a installer package that has an "quiet" option.
