He weighs between 110 and 115 pounds depending on recent input or output. As far as I've observed, they keep their "yaps" shut. WWWebb

Are you talkin' to me? FYI, the picture of my avatar is our 110 pound yellow Lab named "Memaw's Scratch Biscuit". It was taken during the fifteen second interval during which he was dressed up as Elvis for Halloween. No photoshop- it's a $5 latex headpiece with black mesh over the eyeglass holes. I found it at CVS and the color just jumped out and told me who was s'posed to wear it.

And I hope you took my rather droll comment back and used it as ammunition supporting the early release of the hotfix. Regards, WWWEbb

Seems like you're *already* taking a publicity hit. I've never seen the normally staid SANS Institute ridicule a security advisory before. WWWebb
  5. Admin as in ADMINistrative Assistant, not as in System Administrator. WWWebb
  6. The tech writer who is currently underemployed as our admin was having home computer problems. XP refused to let her update Norton Anti-Virus, and she was getting spurious "Messages from Windows Registry" which strongly hinted that there was some spyware/trojan activity going on. I burned her a CD with three freeware anti-spyware products (said "use all three") and three free firewalls (said "pick one"). Gave her this on Friday. Today she tells us the following: After three attempts to re-install OS, reboot cable modem, etc, she gives up in frustration and decides to go and do some work on the wiring in her spare bedroom. She slips, blows the main fuse in the house and is without power for twenty minutes. When she manages to get power restored, everything comes up and is fine. First time I've ever heard of somebody fixing Windows by rebooting their HOUSE. WWWebb

  8. Your statement is correct. I'm not sure which set I used "time before last"- [last time I used the set which is the subject of this thread]- I think it was the last one listed on the vorck.com page (where the Sept note about bugfixes is) it didn't kill the quicklaunch toolbar. Have a happy Thanksgiving, WWWebb
  9. DId you get my email about IZarc (Your instructions refer to it as LZarc) refusing to run because HHCTRL.OCX wasn't present (removed for a good reason, apparently) I did exactly that in the installation I did before trying the new fileset with TommyP's 31-OCT version of HFS:IP, and it worked. However, being an old VMS hand and mistrustful of Redmondian Borgware, I decided to not do that this time and use 7-Zip instead. Regards, WWWebb
  10. I just couldn't resist. It was one of those times when someone just throws themself on the ground and shouts "Shoot me!". DId you get my email about IZarc (Your instructions refer to it as LZarc) refusing to run because HHCTRL.OCX wasn't present (removed for a good reason, apparently)? And it's W2KSP4_EN.EXE, btw. And don't even ask me whether anal-retentive is hyphenated or not. WWWebb.
  11. OK, after throwing this out there . . . I have to ask. Did you? I think he used RunOnce.
  12. Funny stuff. No comment on the avatar? Do you know how hard it is to get a 115 pound yellow Lab to wear a headpiece and sit still long enough to get a halfway decent photograph of it? Our main weapons are surprise and fear, fear and suprise...our TWO main weapons are...
  13. Feel free to use it, with proper attribution, of course. GNU licensing terms apply. (WWWebb:) FDV, 'fess up. You're my kind of guy, Frank. PS- what's up with you and the EMTs? I was one back in the ancient days when people bleeding all over you was only a laundry problem. You've got more files showing up in your graphic showing the contents of your SYSTEM32 directory than I get when I download everything on the list and pick out the extraneous stuff. (WWWebb:) Also, the written instructions still contain some ambiguity (I think, or else it's just me). I'm going to fine-tooth them and send you an email later this week. I was working from the October 10th version - there was a mysterious /MODIFIED directory without reference to how the files in it got moved to someplace where they'd actually get used. It seems you've cleaned the instructions up somewhat. I'll follow up on that later. BTW the creation process using your test files and the 10/31 HFSLIP displayed no errors when I installed it. It didn't give me the opportunity to choose the target partition, though, and it didn't ask for license key information. (I now have four Windows installations of varying vintage on this system. Used to boot Red Hat, too, but took it out for cleaning.) BTW, all - November patch (the_guy has been PM'ed) Thanks for the heads up on the Patch of the Month. WWWebb
  14. Hi, folks, new here. Used the instructions some months ago, but installations/removals have my system flaking out beyond utility rescue-- so I'm in the sandbox again with FDV's latest fileset with TommyP's 31-OCT version of HFSLIP just for grins. Kudos to FDV and TommyP for pretty neat trickery. My personal quip about Windows and security is "You can't unSwiss the cheese", but what y'all have done here is a major step in terms of "hole reduction". TommyP, if you think HFSLIP is fun you should play around with DCL on an OpenVMS system-- It's got everything you can do in Win/DOS batch programming plus the ability to access a whole bunch of system calls as well. There's a hobbyist program and some free access on the net- drop me a line if you're interested. FDV, 'fess up. You've got more files showing up in your graphic showing the contents of your SYSTEM32 directory than I get when I download everything on the list and pick out the extraneous stuff. Also, the written instructions still contain some ambiguity (I think, or else it's just me). I'm going to fine-tooth them and send you an email later this week. Regards, WWWebb
