  1. Whenever I try to play older games in Vista, such as the two listed above, they are really jerky, have a horrible colour pallet, etc. Even playing WoW, Ive noticed that I lost 20fps switching from XP to Vista. Because of this Im almost tempted to switch back. Is there anything I can do to improve gameplay in Vista? Ive noticed that I have DirectX 10 installed. Would rolling back to 9 help? Also, Ive tried running the games in compatibility mode, and disabling visual themes, and that didnt help. WoW Im not concerned about so much, because 35fps is still decent, but when I cant even play AoE anymore, it kind of p***es me off.
  2. I cant believe I didnt think of that. You're 100% right. Opened notepad, and it shows the system drive as F: when it should obviously be C:. I searched what you told me to, but I havent found anything relevant to whats happening, only a lot of stuff about XP or about changing another drive's letter. Care to explain a bit further? Hmm. Tried PartitionMagic in XP compatibility mode, and Acronis Disk Director, and neither would work (PartitionMagic said a file was missing when I rebooted, Acronis wouldnt even reboot the computer to complete the drive letter change). What other (hopefully freeware) tool can I use? FIXED IT!!! Here's the solution, for anyone else that has this problem: - When windows starts to hang on Personalizing, press CTRL ALT DEL - Go to New Task, type regedit and hit enter - Navigate to HKLM/System/MountedDevices - Find the key that has your drive letter, for example, mine was \DosDevices\F: and rename it to what it should be, in my case, \DosDevices\C: Reboot and youre done!
  3. Long story short, Im set up as follows: Partition 1 - was 60gb, now 30gb - XP Partition 2 - was 10gb, now 40gb - Vista Partition 3, 4, 5 - Extended partitions for extra stuf Vista wouldnt shrink partition 2 for me, so I booted XP, and used PartitionMagic to resize. All went without a hitch, so I tried to load Vista (Im using EasyBCD for a bootloader, I didnt like Vista's) and it said it was missing a file. Popped in the Vista DVD and repaired like the error screen told me to, and now it boots Vista. Here's the real problem: After the loading screen, and the logon screen (I have it set to autologon to my account), it sits at 'Personalizing Your Desktop...' for about 5 minutes, then goes to a blank desktop screen (no taskbar, and the old windows 2k background - the blue one). If I CTRL+ALT+DEL, I can start explorer.exe (as its not running at boot) and it will load a 'temporary account' (theres a little balloon tip that says so). How do I get it to boot the proper profile, without having to reformat the partition and redo Vista?
  4. Well its a Corp. Edition, maybe thats why? Whenever I load it in nLite it shows up as Windows XP Professional (Build 0). Go figure Machine has never had XP on it. Or anything for that matter. I just pulled some parts off a shelf and put it together. I actually had to do a BIOS update because it was too old to boot from cd, and the Floppy controller has gone to hell (Used a flash burner and pulled the chip to do it) I added the video card drivers to it, and lo and behold, it worked. Thanks to everyone who helped Now, back to installing six sound cards into it
  5. No hard drive or CD activity, it just sits there. The video card is a working pull from another machine, so I know it works perfectly PIII Socket 1, 288MB RAM, 10GB Seagate, 8GB Maxtor, Nvidia Geforce4 MX440 It was on a normal monitor. Ill try rebuilding it from a clean XP install (no service packs, build 0) Ill give that a shot aswell Never bluescreened though. RAM is fine as far as I know, but Ill keep ya updated. Thanks to everyone that replied!
  6. I made a custom sp2 disk with v1.31 of RyanVM as v2 was giving me problems. After restarting, (I changed it to the old setup look) it goes to Installing Devices, where it says the screen may flicker etc. Anyways, when the screen would normally flicker, it just goes black. I left it over night and it stayed black. If I restart, repartition from the cd, and redo the install, same thing. Whats going on?
  7. Finally got it set up. (Im hosting it on dialup right now, stupid kid whose house we were going to host it at got in s*** and now we're not allowed ) Anyways, it still didnt like virtual hosts, so I played around with the settings in apache and eventually got it to work. We're getting satellite internet soon (nothing else available) so Itll be much faster once that gets here. By the way, you can check it out at www.blackhatgarcia.com
  8. Well it didnt work. Instead of port forwarding on this thing, its got 'pinholes' and you have to set up internal ports and all that fun stuff. My computers IP addy is 192.168.1.1 so I set it to external port:80 internal port:80 internal ip:192.168.1.1 type:tcp Now when I try my local address, or peer address (both given to me by the modem) neither one will show up my website. Im going to try NetServer. Maybe I just set something up wrong.
  9. Thats all I needed to hear. Its a SpeedStream 5200, and after some searching, I read that its a 'crippled' modem ie the port forwarding doesnt work. I picked up a Netopia Cayman 3546-002 ADSL 3500 Modem 4-Port Router for ~$20 on eBay and I will try that out tomorrow night. If it doesnt, then Ill let you know. Thanks again
  10. The problem wasnt getting everything working right: I got them all installed and could run all types of files locally (PHP, Java, mySQL tables etc) the problem was Apache not being displayed from an outside source. All I got was the modem's admin page (which was a bad thing to have displayed). Port forwarding was all set up, but Ive got a new modem on order. Can you use Virtual Hosts for hosting a site online (non locally)?
  11. Ive searched around and cant find the registry key to show the 'Display Options' icon in the system tray. Anyone know it? Id like the registry key, not just 'go into the options and check off whatever box'
  12. Definately godaddy.com If you search yahoo for 'godaddy promo code' you can even get a $2 discount, bringing it down to 6.95! And there are deals on 2,5 and 10 year (I think) Domain names.
  13. Does anyone have a good tutorial for setting up Apache on Server '03? I found lots that show how to use Virtual Hosts, but I could not access it via my IP address. I know how to set up mysql, php, and the like, just not how to get my site online, instead of locally. Thanks
  14. Alright, after lots of searching, I found how to do it (Suprisingly, not on MSFN ) For anyone else who wants to silent install OpenOffice, it is the exact same procedure. Step One Copy the contents of the StarOffice/OpenOffice cd to the folder you want it to be in. Step Two Make a file inside that directory called 'response.txt' Step Three Paste this text inside it, changing DestinationPath to C:\Program Files\OpenOffice if that's what you are installing. Also, change Register4MsWord=Yes, Register4MsExcel=Yes, Register4MsPowerPoint=Yes, and RegisterAsDefaultHtmlEditor=Yes to 'No' If you dont want that extention registered. *****START***** [Environment] InstallationMode=INSTALL_NORMAL InstallationType=STANDARD DestinationPath=C:\Program Files\StarOffice StartProcedure=MyStartProc EndProcedure = MyEndProc [Windows_Desktop_Integration] Register4MsWord=Yes Register4MsExcel=Yes Register4MsPowerPoint=Yes RegisterAsDefaultHtmlEditor=Yes [Java] JavaSupport = preinstalled_or_none [Procedures] Sub PostSetup SetReboot( False ) End Sub HideSetup *****FINISH***** Step Four Call setup like this, changing directories to suit your needs: *****START***** ECHO. ECHO Installing StarOffice ECHO Please Wait... start /wait %systemdrive%\Install\Applications\Staroffice\j2re-1_4_2-windows-i586.exe /S /v/qn start /wait %systemdrive%\Install\Applications\Staroffice\setup.exe -r %systemdrive%\Install\Applications\Staroffice\response.txt *****FINISH***** The first start /wait installs Java, the second installs StarOffice. Have fun!
  15. It must not use a normal setup.exe file. USSF doesnt like it. Ive got all the files in the /Staroffice directory, and running setup.exe with /s /SILENT /VERYSILENT /S /qb all did nothing. There are no MSI files inside the setup file, so what else can I do?
  16. I use DVD2SVCD (you can change the mode when you set up) Its got a section to set your minimum and maximum bitrate, so that should work.
  17. Thanks for the great tool. One question though. What should I add to the registry in order to have a 'find silent switch' on the right click? I tried [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\Find Silent Switch\command] @="\"USSF.exe\" \"%1\"" But I just get a window asking me to pick the file...
  18. Well thats what I would have normally done, but for some reason I didnt (stupid me eh). But I figured out my problem. I had edited TXTSETUP.SIF with the SiS Sata info, and after using nLite to integrate everything, I replaced the new file with the old one. So I just added the SATA info to the new one, and it worked like a charm (although I had to boot off a different hard drive and get yelled at for it) Next time Ill stick to M$ Virtual PC'ing my ISO's before I use them. Still dont know what file would cause the 'Setup is now restarting' Part though. I searched and searched with NTFS4DOS, opened up a few files, and came to the conclusion that I was lost.
  19. Bah. I couldnt decide between the two, so I chose this one because it had more to do with just getting XP installed than working out the unattend bugs. But I decided just to boot off another hard drive, and re-create my XP cd. So thats not a problem anymore. But Im still curious as to how XP knows that setup hasnt been completed there. I checked boot.ini and its fine, autoexec.bat and config.sys are empty, so it must have something to do with the MBR?
  20. Created an Unattend CD, which was put on a DVD because it wouldnt fit on a cd. RyansVM pack thinger was installed and so were a ton of applications. Everything installs fine, until setup restarts and goes through its process. At the very last screen, setup acknowledges that it is "saving settings" with the bar all the way to the right, and just hangs there. I left it overnight to make sure, and it doesnt make a difference. I am doing a clean install on a Maxtor 160gig SATA with the SiS Raid drivers installed and put into the TXTSETUP.SIF file. Help?
