  1. Gentlepeople I had my first experience setting up a vista machine Sept 2. I had such a enjoyable experience of 4 hours pounding my head against the desk, wishing to get hold of programmers at microsoft to make sure they could not pass their genetic code on etc etc etc. Next day their I am, Flat on my back in intensive care with a heart attack. Just got out today (Sept 8). So Now I know the truth about Vista. ITS A KILLER. Could it be charged with attempted murder. Go see your cardiac specialist before working with Vista. Also have a pillow handy on the desk. your brains don't rattle as much. Ken
  2. Have a unique problem never seen before. Went up to girlfriends work to help her with a older dell computer reinstall. Original operating system was windows 2000. We were unable to find the original operating disk to reinstall. I have worked with a lot of dells over the years and have a dell copy of XP Pro SP1. I installed it and it recgonized the computer for oem branding. Found needed drivers and installed. All was well. Next download SP2 and installed it. All was well. Went to MSupdate. WGA downloaded and installed. All was well. Back to MSupdate. 93 updates need to be done. they all downloaded. None of them would install. Tried for 2 hours but none would install. Finally (had to get system up) used autopatcher, which installed ok. Set system to automatic update. The Tuesday release came and these will not install. Any hints on what might be causing this. If need I can reinstall on the weekend again. Thanks Ken
  3. I had this trouble also. Solution unplug the Ide drive. re-Install Windows to the Sata drive. Plug Ide drive back in. Problem solved. Then copy Everything from the Ide to the Sata drive. Reformat the Ide drive to remove the xp install. Restore backup to IDE. When I do a reinstall of windows I'm now unplug all 5 hard drives leaving just the one that gets the install. This way I can not accidentily erase the wrong drive as I always delete the partition and reboot then recreate partition. Windows then does not see any old install. Ken
  4. What I need is a program that will look for a specific text line. Then take out a specific Text Numeric number and either create a excel form or just total it. I am not a programer so I am posting this where programers may know of something that will work for me. Below is a small sample of the 207 page file I have to sift threw by hand each month. The *** Total LAND __ I split out would be one of the sort lines. Then I need to remove the second number from the right end of the line. Also if it has bracketts it is a negative number. The ***Total INTANGIBLE___ would be another different total with amount of 3.69 All the lines that have "TOTAL" have to split out to their separate accounts. Also another section (with different line names) have the number to total 4 from the right. Any pointers to a program to do this would be appreciated Ken Note: All Lines with *** I have spaced for clarity. 5. If this board has jumpers to set cpu speed etc., have you checked them. By checking I mean pull them off the board and put them back on. Are you overclocking as that can cause lockup's and strange behavior. Also try removing the battery overnight to let the Bios settings totally reset. Also take a good look at the Electrolytic Capacitors on the board. They are usually black and stand from 3/8" to 1/2" or more upright. They usually have two numbers on them (Example only 6.3v 1500uf ) If any of them have a bulging round top (not flat) then your board is toast (unless you know a electronics expert that can replace them). Good Luck Ken
  6. I'm at the end of my sanity. I have an old Custom ISA board that is used in about 100 systems we have. It was originally designed to work on the 80286 system. It is only an 8 bit board mapped as 1k of memory at C800. The interface chip is an IDT7130 1K X 8 Dual-port Static Sram with support IC's and Interrupt 3 output (com 2). 19 address lines threw 2 74ls245 buffers and 1 74ls688 comparator. BALE for access and SMEMW / SMEMR for write/read data. 8 Bi dir data lines. Up until the PII it worked on every thing. With the advant of the PII some boards would work, some would not even boot, some would boot but no access to this ISA board. AS it is getting harder and harder to source old 486 and PII boards that work, I've been trying to find the problem of why some boards work and some don't. The software only runs Dos 5.00 and it boots from the CD, no HD in the unit. I have a PII board PC-chips M741 with the Xcel 2000 chipset. This board will 1 out of 40 reboots see the ISA board properly. I have checked every single Timing signal I can think of. I've poured over the schematics of the board and timing waveforms of the IDT chip and the ISA port. If I go into Dos "Debug" I can see the board every time. I can use debug to write to the board. I did eliminate one PAL chip that was needed only when used in a 486 or older, that controlled a set of 27c256 boot chips and routed the BALE directly to the 74LS688. In my test unit this work fine. With the M741 it does not. The only thing I can think of is that their is somehow a incompatibility between how the interrupts are being handled. I have no support from head office as of course they want us to sell the customer a new unit. I don't even think that they have programers that know what is going on in these old dos units as all the new stuff is usb and XP. So I thought that someone here may know what difference came about with the advent of the PII boards and maybe I can find a possible work around for it. Another thing, it seems the old AMI Bios has the least trouble and the AWARD bios the most trouble (they usually will not startup at all) Ken PS. I have tried every single Bios setting you can think of. Taken battery out for full reset, etc etc etc. Insanity is an idle thought away.
